Diagnosis is that i need a new starter. $600 bucks at the dealer. They say the

intake manifold has to come off?? I've worked on lots of cars, but never

heard of this. Has anyone replaced a starter before? Can it be done by a

fairly handy man. Without specialty tools?? Please Help. I don't have an

extra $600. Thanks. oh yeah. 1997 LS 400 Coach Edtion.

A little late to reply, but just thought to share this with others.

I had the same starter problem for my 95 LS400. The starter is under the intake and the dealer wanted $1200 for this 2-day job. I went with a private but Toyota certified mechanic. I spent $400 for it. This is definitely a week link in the Lexus design.

Even later reply, I am in the UK and have a 95 mk 3 which a recall for a starter motor rebuild (free of charge and a replacement car for the two day job). They said that they had a fire in one in the States and recalled every LS400 for this rebuild. Not bad for a motor with over 100k at the time. I'm just wondering.....

 Wow! This is a good day! First I find out (see 'Windscreen chips') about a 'freebie' from an Insurance Co.

NOW I can get my series 3 starter rebuilt free too, (If it hasn't already been!)

Great tip. Will look into this! :driving::driving:
