What Do You Make Of This, Guys ?

Recommended Posts

I had all but decided to buy a Lexus GS300 SE and visited a Lexus Approved Dealer who had a 4 year old 300GS that looked great in the photos on Autotrader, but seemed pricey judging by Parkers Guide.

When I dropped in unannounced after driving 50 miles, they said that the car wasn't there. It was in their bodyshop for "a scratch on the back" to be sorted, so I couldn't see the car.

However, they showed me another "just like it but a different colour" and then proceeded to try to negotiate a price for the sale of the one I hadn't yet even seen !

This was last Tuesday. The ETA for the vehicle reappearing on the forecourt was Saturday (tomorrow), which has now become next Tuesday.

Over a WEEK? For a minor scratch ? Sounds more like serious collision damage repairs to me !

Their attitude was extremely arrogant and indifferent, with the salesman saying as we left that it didn't matter to him whether we bought the car or not. (On the basis of which attitude it may well matter even less to me!)

Is this attitude typical of Lexus dealers ?

What do you make of the extended absence to "put right a scratch" ?

I would say that attitude isn't typical of the majority of Lexus dealers.

I would also walk away from that car and dealership.

Certainly worth putting an email together to Lexus GB customer service, telling of your treatment and that you are still in the market for a Lex and see what they come up with for you.

Personally, if your first impression is bad, don't give them your money. There are plenty of Lexi (what is the plural of Lexus? ) out there so take your time. Mind you, Xmas/New Year is a slow time for car sales, and if there's monthly/annual sales targets to hit, then you have bargining power.

I'm sure if you contact Lexus GB and tell them what happened, they'll bend over backwards to help you. But unless you have another dealer near by, you might end up going to the same shower for the servicing.

I've had mixed experiences from my local dealership.

One time they couldn't be more helpful and gave me all the advice I wanted with no sell pressure. I walked away a happy fella.

Another time I wondered if I'd walked in on bring-your-idiot-to-work-day. Sales tactics were used on me that I thought only estate agents and clean your roof merchants used. I was so gobsmacked and disappointed that I was sorely tempted to write to Lexus UK and offer them my professional services as a business consultant ... and I don't come cheap. Hell, I can afford to drive a Lexus for a start!

Hi Trevor,

I have had 3 GS models over a number of years and my reason for continuing to buy them has been based on both the cars themselves plus my experiences with the dealerships.

I have almost always found that they try very hard [at least in Manchester and surrounding areas] to give excellent service, and even now, they manage to do things that surprise me - in other words do things better thatn you would expect.

Do you live far from another dealer? I would recommend having a drive, visit a different place and start again. I feel sure you will get service so much better it will surprise you. Or look around on the Lexus UK website, where all their stock is listed, and if you see another model that fits your criteria, give that dealer a ring, they may bring the car for you to try. They will try to please you.

Regards,

Tony

[please note - I am not an apologist nor shareholder, just a satisfied customer]

Hi Trevor,

That behavior is not typical. You should name and shame them, and write to LexusGB.

I have dealt with Lexus Guildford, Croydon, Parklane, Bristol and Reading. They have all been excellent. If there is a bad apple out there then we might as well highlight it before someone else tries to eat it !

J ;)

Blow them off.

I'm a salesman and you should treat people as you expect to be treated. I hate bad service. :tsktsk:

Name and shame them.

My local dealer (Nottingham)are a bit slow(parts dept) but the Girls in the reception make up for it

Couldn't be nicer.
