What's free memory like on the box mate?

Have to admit I don't really use XP, haven't done desktop stuff for years, but might be worth checking out whether the disk is running in PIO or DMA mode - to check I think it's Start, Run, compmgmt.msc then expand Device Manager and then hard disk controllers / IDE controllers, then double click the primary and secondary ones and it will tell you what mode it's running in - if the hard disk, which is usually attached to the primary controller, is running in PIO mode that can cause system slowdown as bus mastering isn't enabled - if it is that then there is a registry hack to sort it back out and put it back into DMA mode.

think i found out why.......... when checking the free memory it appears the cpu is running at 100% all the time even with no programmes open etc - its normally about 1 or 2%

ta for the tips guys - as suggested i unselected all the startup items i dont really use - did see a name i didnt recognise so ill check what it is when i look again....

i am running a scan at the mo so cpu is about 100% when it stops ill have a look.

but it does appear that something in the startup was causing the problem, ill enable them one by one and see what happens -ill let u all know

Rob,

Rather than unselecting the startup items ... remove the from registry, keeps it clean.

As for what Aido mentioned for the DMA stuff ... google it, there is a hack that you can force the hard disk back into optimum mode, as appose to it going into it's nany state, because of some error on it !

Get this : http://www.ccleaner.com

That cleans a lot of sutff that you don't need for you !

If you really never ever use System Restore .... uncheck it in your computer properties, it's just another hog !

go into startup and untic every program that you dont use on a daily basis .

Sorry to hijack you thread dude, but I would like to try this, how do I do that? My pc takes ages to start up

hi paul go START > RUN> then type MSCONFIG you will then get a small box pop up on the top is a tab called STARTUP

click on that.

then it will ask u to restart the computer - do it.

you might get a screen when u start up saying u have modified the start up - tick the box that says to hide that message in future.

oh it appears that my comp is back to normal.. strange!
