The other day I pulled into a garage to fill up, stopped, turned off the engine and popped the fuel cap lid. I then realised I'd pulled up at the wrong pump, so without going round to shut the fuel lid, I tried to start the car to move it. All the dash lights came on, but it refused to start, not even turning over. So I went outside and shut the fuel lid, thinking that's all I needed to do.

However, still the car refused to start. After some head-scratching and waiting for a couple of minutes, I found that by pressing harder than usual on the brake pedal, the green light on the start button finally came on and it fired up!

Guys queuing behind me, so maximum embarassment

The car has been faultless before and since, so I think I was just the victim of the Lexus "we'll make sure you don't do anything silly" safety system. My ride-on mower has the same problem, engine cut-outs everywhere

Does anyone know why it took a while to reset itself?
