I've worked on a few cars in my life and found most cars being the same.

Designed by man, Reparied by man.

With the LS400 any tidy garage can work on these cars with no problems. The trouble is that the LS400's hardly break down or have any faults, So they normally just need good servicing.

My LS400 had all the common faults listed on the website. I had them all.

I have now done them all and given the car a complete service changing all the wear and tear items.

The timing belt is the mother of belts to change, But once done you can do anything on the car. I also changed other items around it, So I'll never have to go in there for at least another 70,000miles. The service and belt change took around 18 hours to do. Full details of this can be found under thread "Changed the timing belt" and also "servicing a LS400 MKII costs".

My best tip for the LS400 is that when you do a major service or timing belt, DO ALL THE OTHER BITS ASWELL. It will save a lot of pounds in labour later and avoid problems.

Parts for a full major service & belt change should cost around £300 to £500 on the parts. All depends on your supplier.

is it easy to check if cambelt has been replaced, bloke reckoned it had been done at 129k & there is normal C stamp in service record but not lexus so i'm going to call them tomorrow to see if they have record to confirm that it was changed if not i guess i have to presume not?

With a very low mileage on purchase (38,000) and now having done 42,000 the only things I have had to do are an oil and filter change, antifreeze change and replace the under engine cover which I damaged over a kerb.

At the time I was quite miffed but obtained a good replacement for £20.00 the good thing with Lexus is even though the car is 13 years old all the retaining bolts for the cover came out without a struggle, every other car I have owned would have had seized bolts which either rounded off or worse still sheared off.

Once the cover was off I could not believe how clean everything above it still was ( shiney black paint).

There isn't much room under the bonnet but how many modern cars have to have the engine removed even to do cambelt/chains nowdays!

Not only this but distributor caps and rotor arms! If only they had points and condensors, such memories!

I have done all the usual stuff to my 400... changed all the fluids...plugs, distributor caps, filters , pads etc...and I found it so well put together that it comes apart nicely too!...my advise would be that for usual stuff like oil changes, brakes , plugs etc...use your regular garage just like any other car...now if it was valve clearances or not running right after normal servicing...take it to a Lex dealer ...always use genuine parts and a good quality oil changed every 5000 miles at least...I must admit to being a paranoid oil changer !!!! ...I do mine every 3000...Lexus oil costs 14 quid and a filter 6...cheap insurance for that Atomic V8 in my mind :winky:

gota say lexus treated her well if im to believe all i was told, they had her for a day & half trying to find out what was wrong & had done it on basis it was free as long as i did work with them, which i would of said fook off if it turned out to be a big job. Still a little bit stuttery & they didnt want to spend any more time looking (+the usual dealer didnt like them not being lexus HT leads i'd used so couldnt rule that out) but as they spent that amount of time & only charged my hour or so + parts to do the dist caps etc i was pretty pleased with my first dealings with lexus dealer. But still happy to work on it myself as well so it;s good all round till she goes pop ;) lol
