Since new the auto wiper operation on my car has been a bit intermittent (no pun intended, as I don't mean just on that particular setting :D ).

Sometimes the sensor doesn't appear to work at all, but then works perfectly normally. However, since my front screen has been removed and re-installed it hasn't worked at all :crying:

Anyone else had a problem? Where's the connection to the screen?

I too have had my front screen removed and replaced but can't say I have had any problems before or after. Sometimes the wipers would work at full pelt when it wasn't necessary and I realised yesterday that I could alter the setting - definitely a case of RTFM! Other than that they work perfectly.

T'other half has a Discovery again with auto wipers, but they seem to contine working when the rain has passed making a horrid squeeling noise (like someone scraping their nails on a blackboard!). Acutally maybe I can alter the setting on that too.

My wifes Pug 306 has autowipers and - APPARENTLY - the detector is glued to the screen behind the box that the mirror attaches to, and detects when the screen is being hit by raindrops!

Now, whether thats the truth or just a loada boll**** I dont know, a guy with no axe to grind told me.......

Presumably - if its the same on yours - the screen replacement my not have had the device reaffixed

Tango - best bet is switch it on Auto, pour water (rather than spray) over the "eye" on the outside of the screen and compare your car with a courtesy car at the dealers. That'll prove it one way or another.

I bet it is something to do with the windscreen replacement...

I always wonder how it copes so well with drizzle...and fine mist, because on many Pug's I've driven it works fairly well without any "hitting" of drops even in those conditions...so there must be more to it...

I think this will help: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/wiper4.htm

"The sensor projects infrared light into the windshield at a 45-degree

angle. If the glass is dry, most of this light is reflected back into

the sensor by the front of the windshield. If water droplets are on

the glass, they reflect the light in different directions -- the

wetter the glass, the less light makes it back into the sensor.

The electronics and software in the sensor turn on the wipers when

the amount of light reflected onto the sensor decreases to a preset

level. The software sets the speed of the wipers based on how fast the

moisture builds up between wipes."

Thanks for the info Jamboo. It's the same screen, just taken out and put back in again but I didn't see it whilst it was off the car in the bodyshop. I did see the rear screen as they gave it to me to get it tinted before re-installing and its got a blade connector for the heating element. I'm presuming the front screen has similar.

I'm pleased to saythe bodyshop did a nice job on the roof panel, but the removal and refitting of the screens was subbed to a specialist contractor.

No shortage of the wet stuff at the moment so I'll go and try it again. It could also be affected by the RainX I use.....I tend to turn the auto function off when the RainX is doing it's job. Perhaps the RainX film is reflecting much of the infra-red, in which case would explain the intermittent operation of the auto wiper.

Uh-oh.. :whistling: Might have got a better result had I turned it on...stalk setting was on 'auto' for intermittent wipe, but not set on 'auto' for the wipers  Works fine. My excuse is I couldn't see the setting behind the steering wheel..doh :tomato:

was ur screen removed & re-installed to rectify the rain-sensor wipers problem?
