Just to chip into this debate, I think kerbweight is pretty important and the Lexus is certaintly heavier than the 320d (although the weight isn't in the front doors which feel Yaris-light...)

One thought is that the IS is engineered for 4WD (a pre-requisite for the US market) and this probably makes a difference.

Of course it's more costly to produce a lighter vehicle than a heavier one of the same specification and performance. And Lexus are cheaper.
