I have had the 5th injector replaced and fuel consumption has improved from 29 mpg to 33 mpg but this is achieved by driving slowly (accelerating slowly and always keeping below 70 and freewheeling downhill in places). Which? magazine says it got 46.3 mpg from my model 220D. The Ipswich Lexus dealership said 33 is not bad consumption. Honest John from the Telegraph says the consumption is far too high (he put it more bluntly than that) and I need to take it to an injection specialist. As I got nearly 40 mpg when I drove the IS250 I don't think it is my driving. Also the Cambridge Lexus dealership said my brakes were lasting twice as long as other 220D drivers. Any suggestions of where I go from here would be welcome. (Apologies if this is not in the right place as I am new to forums)

I had my since September 2006, but only done 2890 miles atm, no problem with it yet, touch wood, and i get about 38mpg just driving normally, hasnt got the 5th injector replace yet, as i had no letter from Lexus about that, the only thing i dont like is the paint, it seem to get stone chips very easy, not sure if that happen to other make of cars too nowaday?

Mirror Replaced.

Awaiting EGR valve gasket to be replaced.

Loud crack like stone hitting windscreen coming from dash when it heats up.... just going to leave it as I expect it would lead to more rattles if Lexus tried to fix it....

Paint Chips on Boot (will get garage to check it out when in for EGR valve)

Fuel Consumption not as expected

Do like the style, comfort, sound system.... I would buy another but to be honest it would be a Petrol. Although the new A4 might be tempting

Same here,

My 220d has been backwards & forwards to the dealers SOOO many times (mainly on the back of a breakdown truck) - 6 recoveries, 3 recalls & numerous problems that i've reported. I can't wait to get rid of it but i'd have a petrol one tomorrow...

Another disapointed owner of a 220D........

- very poor MPG - just making 35mpg on long journeys.

- 5th fuel injector and cat replaced in Feb

- EGR and 5th injector to be replaced on Friday.......

€580 for brake discs and pads with 50K miles done???

Would not buy again.....you buy diesel for MPG. I loved my IS200 so if I was buying got a nice stereo/shape, it's back to the 250 for me.

A4 looks a better option since I want to drive diesel.

overall happy with mine

just two recalls Seat belt/injector) and a water pump leaking

Interior mirror replaced(VVVIIIIBBBBRRRAAATTTIIOONN)

external mirror glass replaced (all done the same time as the latest 5th inj recall)

but as mentioned strange noise from drivers seat when getting in and out of car (goes in Wednesday)

but why is Diesel still 10p more than Unleaded Dec 07 Unleaded 97.9p Diesel 97.9p

Just what is this loud crack ?,as you say a stone hitting the windscreen, cause i get the same.

it a ceiling clock but I call it a digital projection clock. I got the black one because at the time that was the only color

they had. But now they have them in black and also in white.

You get enough spam at home and on yer email - the last place you want to see it is on a forum :tomato:

but am a bit concerned after reading all the faults on this thread

In a statistical "normal distribution" of Lexus IS220d owners, there will be thousands who happily sit in the middle of the bell curve and there are those on the fringes who will be either complainers or praisers of their vehicle and it is generally those who lurk in forums such as this.

Me, I'm one of the thousands who sit on the "satisfied" bench - centre right if you like.

To base the purchase of a car purely by reading what is put on this forum is frankly ridiculous. You will find equally happy/disgruntled people on the Audi, Merc, BMW, Saab et al forums.

This is absolutely true of any Forum anywhere...but it does have some major advantages!

What it does (and is invaluable) is prepare you so that you can actually go to a prospective purchase (dealer or whoever) and ask some pretty difficult questions, and tst the car properly...and then watch them deny that there are any problems at all....

It's then up to you to make the decision...

I used 3 forums and read some of the threads about problems quite intently...and then bought my current car with my eyes wide open...

If it wasn't for this forum, several IS220d owners might have left Lexus altogther when they changd their cars. A few have ditched thm for the IS250 Auto, and for good reason and rationale...

I considered the IS250 SE/SEL Auto...

Jesus, after reading this, I'm having serious thought whether better toys and spec (to a degree) over the Honda i-CDTi is enough to compensate from moving out of the 2.4 into a 220d.

Very worrying some of what you guys have had done to your cars.

OH Dear! I have just traded my SAAB 9.5 3.0TDI in for a 1 year old (14000) 220d Sport. After reading all the comments on the forums I am beginning to think I rushed in a bit after being wowed by the toys.

I bought it on the premise that Lexus/Toyota have the highest reliability in the last few JD power surveys. Was I mistaken?

Or am I worrying un-necessarily? Are the forums just for people to complain or are there many more out there who are satisfied?

Can anyone re-assure me?

Only about my 3rd or 4th post but i've now placed my votes.

Had my Is220d SE since Mar 10 and have now clocked up 7,000 trouble free miles. Economy wise I easily average mid 40's mixing up M1 and a bit of town traffic. The wife drove back from a wedding in Sheffield a few weeks back and in 6th gear with cruise set at just over 80 on the clock (about 75 on the GPS) she averaged 51.8 mpg!!!

I agree that turbo lag is horrendous and I am getting a couple of creaks and ratttles from the dash but other than that I have had absolutely no issues at all. One thing that really gets my goat is the drip from the drivers door after it has rained!!!

Hi Flashback.

I am a relative 'newbie' too!

I picked mine up in March 2009 as well and am pretty much well happy with it, having put on about 6000 so far.

The issues I have noticed so far, which are only minor ones after all, are:-

1) The paintwork seems very soft and despite doing everything I can to keep well back from cars on the motorways and fast A-roads, I have already quite a few paint chips on the bonnet, wings and front valance. I spoke to a body shop friend of mine about this and he says its just the type of water-based paints the manaufacturers use these days and there isn't a lot you can do about it. (Perhaps this is why Lexus include a bottle of touch up paint in the glovebox?).

2) When you close the bootlid, it just catches on the top of the bumper and has already started to wear the paint on both corners where the boot closes....a known defect I think?

3) My dash has started to rattle and I cannot fathom where it is coming from...it is really irritating at around 60mph in 5th so I have to turn the music up!

4) 6th gear ratio is nigh on useless except the motorway and even then it just doesn't give the flexibility of drive in high traffic congested situations.

5) I too have the same problem of water dripping onto the drivers seat when I open the door after it has been raining!

Other than these points, the car is superb and I am very pleased with it indeed. It makes a change to the usual German cars I have bought in the past and the rarity value is also a major point!

How are you getting on with yours now?

Hi Guys

I've had my 220d for almost 2 years with 20,000 on the clock. I've experienced the same problems with a rattle from the dash and the marking of the rear bumper from the boot lid. On the positive side I regularly get 46mpg over a month's mixed motoring. Stone chippings seem to appear quite regularly on the paintwork and it's a problem trying to get a decent colour match.

Overall I'm really pleased with the car for comfort, looks and reliability - this is in stark contrast with my previous BMW 320i that suffered 3 breakdowns in the first 5 months of ownership, an experience that I will never be foolish enough to repeat again!

not a hope , no way never .

I have had all of the above issues , on my 4th full set of alloys , front stonechipped to hell in 50k miles , dealer was ok , but i wouldn't say the best experience .

I could get the same MPG from the 250 auto as i did from my diesel , and thats even if i wasn't paying ,as mine are company cars .

I am replacing mine in the next month and will be getting a BMW 320d Msport

Lexus diesel

1 not clean enough on CO

2 no auto

3 poor mpg

4 cheap plastics (the bmw interior is way better head and shoulders)

5 it actually has 6 gears i can use

IS220d on a 57 plate, 60k miles and nearly £10,000 of warranty work and still not right.

Would I have another? Not flaming likely and after the recent support or lack of it from Lexus GB, I'll make it my life mission to never spend a single penny with Lexus again.

My car is truly sh*te and will be replaced shortly by a nice shiny Scirroco!

I've had mine for a month now and I do have a couple of issues with the car,it is the worst car I had ever had regarding driving when there is a bit of ice on the road,I've owned rear wheel drive cars before and never had to abandon the car because it would not go up a slight incline.

The other thing is the loud cracking noise when the heating first goes on,the first time I heard it I thought the window screen had cracked.

Other then that it's is a nice car,the MPG seems to be alright.

10 months from new, 28,000miles, 4 tyres and an average 41.6mpg.

Only gripe are the servicing costs £199 for 10k interim and £399 for the 20k service, so the next interim service at 30k will be carried out for £125 using genuine Lexus filters etc at my local garage. When are the timing belts changed is it 40k, or 60k?

This poll is surprising.

15% or so have broken down, more than 1/3rd with rattles, even more with poor economy. Nearly a 1/3rd with no issues, so it seems like 60% plus have had some sort of problem.

Seems a lot for a Lexus!

Also, is there one of these for IS250? If so. Where?

My car will be changed in 6 months and I am considering the 250 Auto SEL MM (facelifted).

Some very interesting (mainly negative!) comments here. But, as the saying goes, for every bad experience you have you will tell 10 people, for every good experience you have you will tell 1 person.

I have a '07 220D SE but for only two months. I absolutely love the car. I have rattles and the infamous "crack" when the dash heats up. I also have the scratches on the boot lid where it meets the rear bumper. No major issues for me.

I had a bad start with the fuel economy getting only 31mpg on a full tank! But since then I have taken it back a notch and I'm getting about 43mpg (530 miles to a tank). I tend to drive on 50mph roads quite a bit so the car is being run at its most efficient speed a lot.

I think the comfort of the car is top of its class. I have driven executive A6s, BM5s and Merc Es and I prefer the interior of the Lexus by a mile. I also love the look of the car. That's primarily what drew me to the car originally.

Having said all of this, I haven't had any major problems so maybe I should come back in 12 months! I would encourage other readers to post if they have had positive experiences with their 220Ds. It would give a more accurate look to the statistics above.

is220d uses the chain. It has to be replaced when it will be worn out (you will be able to hear this)

If you don't drive like a pig, it should last "forever"
