I have just changed my 290K mile Mk2 for a 1997 Mk 3 and have found that I only have tweeters and the sub base speaker working.

Does anyone have any experience of this issue?

Is there a seperate amp for the mid range speakers?

Where is it located? and where is the fuse for it located.

I had downloaded a workshop manual for my old LS from TIS, but they have tightened up who can access the database now, and have limited it to US residents

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Normally the both the mid range and tweeters are driven off the same amp channel with a HF crossover so if the tweeters are working it means the sound signal is getting to both speakers.

It looks very much like the mid range speakers have gone open circuit albeit unusual for all of them at the same time.

If you can remove a door panel to gain access to the speaker connect a known good one accross the terminals of the suspect one to see if the sound comes on.

The amplifier should be under the passenger seat but access means seat removal and the associated hazards involved!

But if you wish to start here the wiring to the speakers from the amp is explained in the link below.

Good luck

hi Kendr,

the amp is located under the drivers seat on a uk spec ls400.MK3

If you slide the seat fully up and fully forward , you can gain enough access to remove the amp (there is only 1). !st remove the plastice cover panel (2x screws under square covers ,these prise out.

Amp is held in by two pozi head screws each side, Amp has about 8 screws holding it together and is easy to take apart

and re.asemble. I have some experince of this as my driver rear speaker is very intermitent (95% of time off) but all

other speakers work. Ive not been able to trace the fault at the amp or speaker end so if you have any luck with yours

let us know the fault.

Thanks steve.

sorry forgot to add, the link takes you to a 98 model, which I think is the Mk4, however the wiring may be the same but I would double check everything with a multimeter first. I know I tried to to fault find mine and in the end ending up ripping out the amp altogether and starting again with a new head unit and speaker cable. Good luck you'll need it as it's a bit of a nightmare job

Sorry for the confusion on the location of the amp ( using US websites) .

If you have a multimeter and can access the plugs on the amp I may be able to talk you thru testing.

Thanks for your help, hopefully (weather permiting) I will be looking at it this weekend.

Armed with my (albiet American) official workshop manual, I hope to get it sorted, as this car is considerably noisier than my other one. It has not been well looked after, there is significant wind noise, and a slight whine at around 40-60 MPH.

Thanks again for your help, I managed to get to the front speakers over the weekend, and replaced them. I now have music. I am sure the car seems smoother now.

Unfortunately the only speakers that were available at short notice means that the tweeters do not now work but this is a temporary matter.

The front speakers are 5.5 inch 2ohm pioneer speakers with three screw fixing, most speakers you get over the counter are four point fixing and 4 ohm. If anyone needs instructions on how to get the door card off please e-mail me and I will send you instructions
