Excessive Tyre Wear

Recommended Posts

Hi,

has anyone suffered from excessive tyre wear on a RX300. I have an RX300 and after 5000 miles noticed that the front tyres were well worn on the outside. Took it to the Lexus garage and they told us the tracking was out. So they changed the tyres round and tracked it at the reasonable price of £162.50. Well, 6000 miles later the tyres were completly shot.

What sort of milage should we expect out of a set of TOYOs

We had another problem with the front brake pads. The little retaining clip for the pads keeps coming out, making the pads ratlle every time you hit a bump....sounds like the front wheel is coming of. Lexus told us that is was because the pad were worn....and this was after less than 9000 miles. Anyway, three clips later the problems seems to have gone. Could be something to do with the superglue

Bingo

If your tyre wear is uneven e.g outside this is 'positive camber'

If your tyre wear is inside this is 'negative camber'.

Camber adjustments can be made to suspension to fix this, for example my GS/Aristo needs slight negative camber as the back wheels cramp under power. I had excess negative camber after track use and the tyres wore on the inside badly. Camber adjustment sorted it all out.

Sometimes when they clamp the card down on the boat from Japan, it can move the camber out badly and suspension needs re-set after importing a Jap car.

Even wear is OK, but uneven wear is camber problem. Take it to a specialist such as Lexus but if not a 4-wheel alignment / suspension specialist could sort it out.

I had exactly this problem, bald inside edge on front wheels after 5,000. Lexus sorted out the camber problem with a four wheel alinement and two new tyres. :D

I did have it aligned at the Lexus garage (as stated above) but they still wore out. Next Next Lexus garage I tried wanted £110 quid a tyre to replace them, plus £80 to put it on the tracking machine, and £80/hour for the work. Found it cheaper to take it to the local tyre place and have it tracked there. Lexus told me that only they could track the RX300 but hey, who cares. At £80/tyre and £20 for a four wheel alignment, it is cheaper to replace the four tyres every 8-9 months than go to Lexus.

Has anyone experienced a massive price difference for quotes from different Lexus garages. We had quote for some rear parking sensors. Local garage quoted £550 and one 25 miles away quoted £435, consistent ,NOT

Don't know if it helps, but there was a RX300 of 80.000kms at my Lex dealer shop waiting for a gear box change due to (as the mecanic told me) an exessive tyre size, it was mounted in 18') and Lexus France didn't cover the change under waranty due to a non Lexus wheels fited.

Does greatest wheels affect the fiability of the gear box ?

Had my RX for 26 months and done 26k miles. I have needed 2 new tyres, both off side front. However one was due to a 4" pothole. The second wore on the inside within 5k miles but I wasnt watching and when I had it replaced it was tracked and i have done at least 5k since and it still looks great with even tyre wear.

Lexus noted the balding tyre at the 20k service and recommended I retrn fro a 4wheel alignment at £120. I didnt and it looks good so far.

Regarding the front brake pads I noticed that the little retaining clip for the pads permanantly looks like it is about to come out but after 6k miles since noticing it hasn't so far!I did find I could remove them easily by hand and put them back in to their full depth but they seem to work out and then stay in that position. I asked Lexus but they were uncoincerned. At the 20k service Lexus suggested the pads would need renewing at the next service although they seemed pretty good for some distance to me. Time will tell

Lexus servicing is expensive - compare :

Lexus Glasgow - £550 for full service + standard brake pads

OR

http://www.the-garage.co.uk - £115 for full service + performance brake pads.

I took my car to Kenny Brown in Glasgow for 4-wheel alingment, £70 and the car has been good as gold, no uneven tyre wear.
