New Rubber Required, Recommendations Please

I have done 26000 on the tyres that came with the car and now need to replace. I do mainly motorway miles.

I would like something with less road noise if possible.

Its a sport model, so 18" rims, although I forget the exact tyre sizes :blink:

Let me know what your recommendations are? And where the cheapest places to get them from are?

What are you running at the moment? I switched from Dunlop SP Sport 9000s to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics recently and the difference in road noise is incredible!

Plus the grip is amazing, I'd highly recommend them :)

I believe they are Dunlop SP's also.

The ones standard on the car is Dunlop Sport Maxx isnt it? Does all 4 tyres need changing already? i change my front to at 22000

I would like to change to a different make too, but id only do that when all 4 require changing.

I am just about to start looking at some new rubber and currently have Contis on Baranusa 18's.

I certainly won't be refitting Contis, they seem noisy compared to others. Currently thinking about Dunlops as i thought the Goodyears would be louder. but now parthiban has put that info up, then i'll look again.

People have been talking about Toyo's and Yoko's but i found it difficult to find the availability in the correct sizes.

So at the mo, i'm in the goodyear camp. but i wouldn't expect them to last that long...

Any 18 inch rim owners with advice?

Mine's running on Toyo T1-R's at the mo but they're on 19" rims. A lot quieter than most, and the grip in wet and dry is very good.

My IS200 is running on Toyo Proxes 4, and they're marginally better than the T1-R regarding noise/grip but Toyo don't yet supply the sizes I require for my 19" rims....when they do I'll be using them on the 250.

Not sure if Toyo supply the sizes you need in Proxes4 for the 18", but would recommend them if they do.

My rear tyres are due for a change, they are all Dunlop Sports Maxx but was wondering if it is ok to change to a different brand just for the rear ones. That said, I have done 40,000 miles on the rear Dunlop ones...its still running, I was told it can do another 2000 miles. Michelin seems to be very expensive, I found Dunlop Sports MAXX the cheapest - £112.00

Its between Toyo T1-R which are available in the sizes above.

Or the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric which is available in 225/40/18 but NOT in 255/40/18, although they do 255/45/18.

My questions are, which tyre would be better in your opinion?

Secondly, Would 255/45/18 be OK for the rears? If not which sizes are closest to 255/40/18?

I thought you had to stick to the recommended sizes only, as the circumeference will change and so will your spedo accuracy, trip computer etc, and you could find yourself inadvertantly breaking the speed limit!!

255/45 will mean that the circumference will increase, therefore effectively changing the "gearing" and final drive too. By what percentage I don't know. You probably need to get that slide rule and Pythagoras's Theorem books out :winky:

EDIT in this case, could you not be creating a situation where you are going faster than the speedo says (thereby effectively under reading)?

Yep Jamboo's right, that tyre size would make the wheel larger than the existing one so you speedo would under read (you'll be going faster than indicated)

Don't know too much about the Toyos, but I know there are a lot of people on here with them on the mk2 IS and are pretty happy, I believe Lexus actually now fits these as the OEM tyre rather than the Bridgestones.

One way to test them would simply be to get a test drive in an 08 IS to see what the tyres are like............. :whistling:

Roonaldo, delete the chart in your last post...I've corrected mine as it had an error. The 265/35 R18 643 mm 2020 mm of course is +0.86 % not -0.86% :blush: Sorry!! Aim to keep within + or - 2.5% if at all possible.

Co-incidentally, i'm trying to find 4 new boots for my 250SEL and struggling

The originals have done 30k and are being replaced, as the dealer is changing the

wheels due to corrosion. The originals are Bridgestone Potenza 225/45R17 and 245/45R17

the original pattern is an RE050 but the rears it cant get anywhere so i have been

offered the the same Bridgestones as an asymetrical RE050A does this make any difference?

The RE050A's seem alot cheaper, or am i just worrying over nothing.

I'm a bit worried about the durability of the T1-R's. Anybody recommend something that is hard wearing and quiet. I do alot of motorway miles, so grip isn't the be all, more important is quietness and durability?

Mine have done over 20,000 miles so far and still have a reasonable amount of tread left, and there's more on the fronts than the rears. What's your expectation? If I did all motorway miles I'd expect to have even more tread left as I do tend to explore the grip limits on some of the quieter A & B roads we have around here :whistling:

Looking for around 30000 miles. This is what the Dunlops gave me. But something a bit quieter.

Toyos should give you about the same mileage then, although I will add my geometry has been looked after by Doc Bones @ WIM and my tyre pressures have been monitored and adjusted to ensure even wear. Saying that the car has been dropped 1.4" on the front and 1" on the rear so i do have more negative camber than standard as there's no camber adjustment on the second generation IS.

recently fitted 4 x falken fk452s to my GS and spent a week in wales on country lanes and very wet roads .... Got to say handling grip and road noise excellent compared to my yokos .... Well chuffed at 72 each from camskill - fitted and balanced by local garage for 5.50 a tyre.
