I'm planning on fixing my air con this weekend, it wasnt working when i bought it. The car is a Mk 2 on a 94. I'll be evacuating the system when its fixed so i need to know the amount from empty.

Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul,

Start with charging around 350g of 134a and run system. Depending on operation pressures etc.... add refrigerant in small quantities (giving time for system to stabilize), monitoring pressure and look at the sight glass. The manufactures specified quantity is normally accurate, so if it is exceeded by over 50g...it will possibly be overcharged.

The correct charge is attained when the sight glass has no bubbles visible indicating a full column of liquid while the a/c is running. Slowly rev the engine to around 1500rpm frequently and stabilize checking dynamic pressures. All this is done checking the air off temp at the vents. This method (although somewhat compressed) is the best way to achieve optimum system performance.

I wrote a bit of info in "air con problems" thread. I doubt I need to tell you to change the filter/dryer before commission of the system, as contaminated filter/dryer will affect system performance.

If you would like any further info you are welcome to pm me....

Good luck with the repair,

Scott
