220d Gearbox (again!)

Having read the other threads about the gearbox I'm a bit unsure as to whether my (perceived?) problem is the same or not.

When changing up from 2nd to 3rd it sometimes goes in cleanly, but sometimes I get a slight bit of resistance or what feels like something "catching".

When changing from 4th to 5th I frequently find that the change is "baulked" and will not go in to 5th, unless I slip back to neutral & try again. On 1 or 2 occasions I will have to do this a couple of times.

My son-in-law, a BMW senior tech, has given the car a test drive and says that in respect of the 2/3rd change there is a problem with the synchro not meshing cleanly, possibly due to misalignment of the synchro hub. As regards the change to 5th he wondered if it is down to the way I have been changing gear, e.g. holding the gear lever too far over to the right when making the change. Since he made this comment I have been "watching myself" but still get the problem.

Has anyone got any thoughts or comments or experienced similar problems?

Thanks

I've had the same problems, the dealer has changed 2nd and 3rd gear, now it's jumping out of 4th and when I reversed uphill recently the clutch overheated causing smoke in the cabin.

have written to Lexus and demanded a new gearbox and clutch, as the whole drivetrain is poor..

will let you know the outcome..

I had a modified selector fork fitted to mine which greatly improved the 2/3 change, but had no other problem as you describe above. However the dealer b*llsed up the re-assembly of the box and I had a leak on the input selector shaft seal afterwards. They changed the oil to a thinner one as 1st & 2nd were nearly impossible to select in cold weather first thing in the morning. This didn't make much difference, so, wthout any argument or stalling, they swapped the box from another car & this was much better. However they casued another problem, (not gearbox) on another job at the same time. Needless to say I no longer had any trust or faith in them (or the car) so I've got rid of it now.
