I cannot believe BT

I am using BT ADSL and have never used the email address that came with the account.

Anyway.. my brother decided to hook up to the pop account and ended up with 600 email coming in to his inbox.

All spam... every single email was unsolicited email.:angry:

I also got myself a business line installed at my old office last year.. I registered the line and attatched the phone. I got a call from Thompson direcotory asking if I would like a free listing .. I replied " you mean you wish to sell my information you mean?" .. err no sir "yes you do and no I do not want your free listing so I can be pestered by poxy salesmen"

So BT sold my new phone number as i started receiving calls from various sales people... I had not even issued the number to anyone.

This completly sucks and because you have a business line they assume that they can sell your information.

Personally I think BT are the worst of the lot.

take a look here: http://www.btsuck.org

Also.. why is the net become such a horrible place to be?

Spammers have now got through anti spam software by using images to get past filtering. I am sooo sick of the net and scared for my son to use the net.

How many of you have received obscene email... shocking.. I have even had an advert for firearms!

:angry::angry::angry::angry:

The good story is being an ex internet service provider I have enough savvy to report offending websites that unsolicit my inbox and get them shut down.

:angry::angry: DIE SPAMMERS DIE :angry::angry:

Bonjour,

Exactly the same than FT/Wanadoo (France telecom is doing) ressailling your web address, I sent a few mails regarding spammers (actually around 15 mails every days) without any replies. A lot coming form US companies.

From insurrance companies to teenage X pictures !!!

This is really (censored) off

Anyway one of the best thing to do is to clean the cookies from time to time, boring but usefull…

I created a hotmail account for my 8 year old daughter so I could msn her. I left it a while before I let her loose with it. Before I did a spam email arrived in her inbox advertising a site where you could view pictures of a woman and a horse  . No one had my daughters email address and I'd selected to not have it listed in the msn directory! I guess microsoft's site is not so secure.

I've now deleted her account and abandoned the idea - it's just too risky. I've also bought some cyber sitter software.

thats the new thing now chris.. they get by this by using a full blown image in your email.

Also I sold my mate a computer and was a fresh install and got him hooked up to the net. Whithin 20 mins we had message pop ups (not sure how) of porn links. At the time his son was using the net to look for games and he kept getting messages.

Makes you realise what a sick word we live in

Those pop up messages are a big problem these days.

If you want a good place to go to understand what you need to do to prevent these then go to this link:-

Pop Up Message Solution

Basically, you have to prevent UDP & TCPports 135,137-139 plus port 445 - you can do this via a personal firewall.

Hope this helps because those pop up spams drive you crazy :arrrggg-matey: :crybaby:

Cheers

Rick

if you want an email account for your daughter mate, that will never be sold on to spammers etc- let me know, I'll create her one on my domain.

Thanks for the offer. I've gone for the solution of her having an email address on a domain I own. Email to any address on the domain goes to me so I can preview it before showing her what she's received. Until she's older this is going to be a pretty water-tight solution. Also for now she's not getting access to messenger.

best solution out there mate - no automated solution can replace that.

Had the same dilemma myself this weekend, building a laptop for our 11 year old nephew.

ICQ and Kazaa lite would be great applications for him - I could chat to him over the net, and he could talk to mates etc, and he could download songs etc.

but - the risk of other people contacting him, downloading "other" materials was just too great.

settled for an email address on my domain (and he does not download the mail - it stays on the server where I can see it) and Kazaa on his mothers account - she can use it to control to download what he wants, and at the same time preview it to make sure it is suitable etc.

ICQ is not used at all - I decided that no instant messenger was safe enough to leave in front of a child

If you put the words "spamcop", ordbs, maps, in your email filter -it will look at the headers note that the ip address has been listed as spam and delete them for you.

This gets about 95% of the spam we get, although you can always subscribe to the ordbs database and that will realtime check to see if the originators ip is lsited as a spam factory. Most ISP's list the orbs info as warning that it originated from a spam factory - its up to you to filter it.

I have yet to find a 100% solution to ridding spam - my way has reduced it but still not 100%

i am using a spam filter which does rid most of it.. but i still find myself checking the deleted box for messages that have been filtered.

some people addresses on sign up have words like wessex or woodcock

these get filtered.

Spam Inspector is a good one..

allows you to report and to bounce mail back if they have a valid email address.

Picks up 95%

you can train it to to pick up certain words like money or finance

Zonealarm Standard is available as a free download. See above link.

However, before Mailwasher went commercial, it reached v 2.0 as a freebie... (with nag banner).

It has a database of spam servers etc, and allows banning of *@where-ever.com, keywords and works with hotmail.

I've sent you the URL Ricky.

(Available to other GOLD members.)

When signing up for forums, services, etc on the Net I always use the domain name of that company/organisation, as the first part of my email addy.

E.g.

lexusownersclub.co.uk@mydomain.com

This way I have been able to track those unscrupulous organisations who have sold my email address on, even when requested not to.

As such, I successfully brought a case against a well known online computer parts company last year and won it. :) This obviously only works if you own your own domain name. Another useful tip is to submit any spam emails to this site:

www.spamcop.com

I'd just like to point out that I have never received any spam mail as a result of being a member here, and am completely certain I never will :)
