Hi all. :D

I'm about to buy my first Lexus Ls400, in fact I'm going to have a look at 1 tomorrow morning.

I have been restoring a few Porsches recently but am a complete newbie on the Lexus.

Does anyone have any tips or stuff I should look (out) for?

Cheers,

Ruud

hi and welcome to loc

I had a 94 ls for 18 months and never had a single prob with it- but had been very well looked after - you'll love it ;-)

Usual things when buying any car- but ls is a big heavy car so check suspension parts.

There are quite a few LS owners on here though much better qualified than me to comment

Good luck and let us know how you get on

well..I am now the proude owner of a 1993 Lexus LS400 :)

I decided to take it trough a car wash...BAD idea

Now if I floor it the revs completely die...it still accelerates when I do it gradually but when I push the pedal down too far she just dies  Also the rev counter stopped working, don't know if that's related

What a great start..lol

These cars are normally first class, i had a 400 for a couple of years without 1 single problem.

Even though it was a p reg i could not hear it tick over.

It is worth having the car checked over hopfully it is only a plug or ht lead breaking down...

Welcome to the club, and maybe someone with more techo will help you on here..

Thanks for your response Ian.

I doubt it's a plug though cause when accelerating gently she will rev, only when I press the pedal in too far at once she dies......

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a 93 400 and it is great, i suspect that if it started after the car wash i would think that you have get water on the coils or leads, or even have soaked the air filter or MAF, check all is dry and if you have to change the leads plugs and coils. The car will appricate the new ignition parts after 24 years or so. Let us know how you get on.

Hi Ken, thanks.

I think about 20 miles before we hit the car wash. Before that it was running fine, I floored it on the way to the car wash 1 time just to catch a boy racer :)

hi,welcome to loc :)

it could be water/damp related so if it still drives ok under normal driving conditions it may be worth driving for a few days to see if it improves.

good luck and keep us all informed :)

Hi Spikes, thanks.

When I'm careful with the accelerator pedal she still drives normal and yes let's hope it's only water/damp and it resolves itself

On some rotating washes they do also spray water from the floor upwards so possibly there could have been some water got on the electrics, which is what I'd say it sounds like to me.

Hope you sort it out

Yes, I did choose for the under body wash. I just hope it didn't burn out anything.

The rev counter stopped working as well after the wash but that works again so hopefully it'll be fine when all is dry again?

The weather here isn't exactly contributing to that.. lol

Not sure on the LS but I was thought on older cars (Escorts,Dolly sprints and the like) your rev counter worked off of the coil, which if that's correct check both of yours for damp, but it might just be a coincidence that your rev counter packed up and you seem to have a damp problem

Unfortunately the weather was so crap I could't take any pics.

Good new is; I managed to 'fix' the acceleration issue by taking off the MAF sensor connector, cleaning it and voila...she ran perfectly again.

What an easy fix :D
