Price For Fitting Unichip

Recommended Posts

Went into Wallace Performance on the way home from work today.

To get a quote for fitting the Unichip piggy back ecu.

The guy told me it would be £225 to get this done.

This was for 3 hours labour including 2 hours on the rolling road, and mapping

Was told that they were not sure what would be achieved but would deffinatley get the fuel mix spot on.

Would you guy advise getting this done.

Cheers Super Mole

3 hours labour? for what?

Is that to fit the one you already have? did you show them it? if so did they say if you'd need a new harness or not?

If not then 3 hours labour to fit is a joke. Them what 8 wires could be done in an hour at the VERY most.

Although 2 hours mapping doesnt seem a long time, i left mine for a day and a half to be mapped. though it was twice the price.

Did it make a huge difference? Can you feel the gains?

Sorry Stav but what I ment was 1 hour for fitting and 2 hours on the rolling road for mapping.

Yes I did show him the one I've got and he said he thinks that is all the wires you need but he would check with another guy who fits them at their place.

When I 1st got the Lex and found out (from here) that you can't "map" the is200, I asked a well respected place in Luton as there is no where in Milton Keynes that I know of that tunes cars, they quoted me £780+vat for a uni-chip and 1 day on the rollers (total price). What put me off was there was no "we expect to get X amount of gain, just "it will feel smoother mate""

That sounds better, still not entirely sure how it works but if you get a couple more horses and a smoother ride maybe its worth it?

its up to you at the end of the day fella. and if you get a power run out at the end you'll know your BHP as well.

Wallace Performance are a good tuner mole. Bobby have used them. might be worth speaking to Bobby

Bobby has got the Unichip aswell Rod. But like the others say dont know much information about it.

Might ask them if it works the injectors.

I sound like I know what I'm talking about but I have NO IDEA

Just thought that because I've already got one it might have been a good idea to fit it.

But if its no good then will just leave it off.

What difference dose one that works the injectors make :withstupid:

Told you I have NO IDEA

Dastek Unichip as supplied by Wallace is a piggyback ECU & here is what (according to Dastek) it does or allows to be done by the tuner:

Variable valve timing adjustment

Rev limit adjustment

Boost limit & level adjustment

Dual maps for use with different fuel grades & types

Water Injection

Nitrous oxide progressive injection

Bigger/supplementary injector handling

Variable induction control

Launch control for turbo vehicles

Full throttle gear changes

Road speed limiter removal

Speedo conversion for imports

Shift light

Idle speed stabilisation

Like Adrian I am not an expert on this but all seems to work very effectively with the s/c on my car.

cheers

Bobby

Would it be worth starting a thread with some information on the various types of piggy-back ECU, possibly that could be a sticky ? It's something that's often asked about on here. I'm assuming there isn't an old thread like this already.

I'm thinking of something like the exhaust sticky that we already have, e.g. TTE black box, HKS FCD/VPRO/etc, Greddy, Unichip, etc. Pros and cons of each (e.g. some can control fuel injectors and some can't ?), reliability (bad for TTE black box ?), rough cost, ease of config/mapping, suitability for supercharger/turbo, etc, etc.

But no individual injector control unfortuantly.

The problem is theres too many variables. Some you only need if you have a new engine, some wont handle some types of injectors, some require unlimited extras to work properly. and theres so many types unfortuantly.

A lot as well, the information is held closely by the makers. I.e the HKS FCON V PRO, you have to be a specialist power writter to even see the instruction book/installation diagrams.

If you need any info on the FCD/Black box/Emanage Ultimate or Blue, give me a shout and i'll see if i can help.

But Unichips and FCON V pro's are pretty specialist. Trying to look in the FCON SR at the mo.

Then you've got even more complex ones like the LINK system (i think Memo is using on his V8 install)

I will try and sort some info out later tonight if people want?

Well, even just something like that might help ? Maybe for Unichip and FCON Vpro the entry would have to be pretty short and just say it's very complex. But even for the Vpro perhaps people could be warned that there seem to be lots of issues to get it to even work at all (or is it just that TDi don't know how to fit it properly ?). Would be perhaps useful to know for some of these items whether anyone has got them working ok ? e.g. so at least someone knows if they're taking a big risk or not !

I'm only really asking out of personal/academic interest, although this question does seem to come up quite regularly from members who have more of a need for the info.

Not trying to create unnecessary work for anyone though.
