Although having just upgraded my Iphone to 2.2 software and re-jailbroken I really think if anyone asked me I'd just have to recommend...2.2 has made huge difference to speed and no more safari crashes.

Found a cool theme too that makes it look like a bb storm....which is another cool feature...when you get bored with the looks...just load a new one which looks completely different ;)

I see on the back of one of my wifes mags that t-mobile are doing the g1 for free on £35/month contract with 700 mins, unlimited text and unlimited Internet.

I think it's actually free on £30 now, it really isn't selling as well as they expected, but makes you wonder how they got their initial estimates

Yes I am warming to the Iphone as a possible replacement, but it is a few months before I can do anything anyway so I'll have to see what else comes onto market. The most interesting handset is probably the N97 as it has a mammoth spec but it's most likely to be a little disappointing.

In the mean time, what are the things wrong with the Iphone? I already know of the lack of MMS, A2DP, poor camera and inability to send data via Bluetooth and of these the only one that really bothers me is the A2DP.

But what else is missing?

MMS - Jailbreak and add Swirly MMS - Excellent app and adds MMS functionailty - you have to pay (7 USD I think) but thats a one off charge with free updates for life......Its also linked to your phone so whatever you do (wipe etc) with your phone then you can always re-install Free of charge.

A2DP - You got me on that one.....no ability at mo but think phone is capable - it just needs software "unlocking" by apple

Poor Camera - I'd debate that one.....Ive had some excellent pics from mine - 2mp is fine for a phone camera - any more then I'd use a "camera" instead. The main issue is its missing a flash.

Bluetooth file transfer - same as A2DP - But you can set your Iphone as a webservice - and let people connect and transfer via the internet instead - larger range than Bluetooth ;o) or you can email files as easy.

Cant think of anything else thats missing and to be honest - the main problem I had with mine was when I jailbroke - Safari would crash on certain webpages sometimes (including this site if you tried to add comments or reply to a post) and it always seemed a tad slower.

However, with the 2.2 update its like its been supercharged....and no more crashes.

But now I'm starting to sound like a salesman so I'll shut up...... ;)

So you cant send files via bletooth with the Iphone?

No mate, only way you can get files in or out of these things is via something like WinSCP and using an SSH daemon on the Iphone which gives you full access to the filesystem, handset to handset you're screwed!

Basically get an Iphone and everyone will think you've cleared your act up as you'll no longer be sending everyone rude texts as you can't forward them and you won't be sending everyone porn in the pub as you can't do that either

See fundamental things like that on modern mobiles phones. Why havent they added it?

makes no sense to me.

So what can you do with the Bluetooth? or does it just not have it? can you attached to a car kit?

*sigh*

Email. Email. Email. Email. Email.

iTunes. iTunes. iTunes. iTunes. iTunes.

Air Sharing and similar apps. Air Sharing and similar apps. Air Sharing and similar apps. Air Sharing and similar apps. Air Sharing and similar apps.

That's how you get things in and out of iPhones.

Bigger, better, faster.

Havent seen anything on N97 yet could be interesting.

THis is what pi55es me off with apple they make a product that can do things and then dont let people use them until they pay an extra charge.

Blue tooth that again is a joke lots of things use it, and again its a fundamental thing that most people would "expect" on a phone and you dont get.

Like Stav said how do u connect to existing blue tooth device like car kits etc.

Bluetooth handsfree is like any other phone - just turn it on and pair it to the kit - it's just that the Iphone can't do file transfers over Bluetooth or let you listen to music through stereo headphones etc - it just works with headsets and carkits as that's the only profile it handles.

Saw a shot of a new Nokia UI earlier, looks quite nice, no idea what they're going to implement it on though!

So is there differnent types of blue tooth then like audio and data ? I find it odd that it can do one but not the other ?

Kind of mate - core Bluetooth itself is the same, it's just that each device supports different profiles that each do a different task - see here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile

Bluetooth itself just sets up the wireless connection between the two devices and then they're free to talk to each other using whichever profiles they both support - and that is where the stack on the Iphone is severely hampered as it only talks HFP & HSP! They'd need to add FTP support for you to be able to send and receive files from mates down the pub etc :)

I have seen someone using one.

It's basically an N96 with a different shape and a slightly more advanced interface.

Once you have configured your home screen and added pics of your most called contacts and moved these preset frames around a bit you are about done with investigating the touch screen.

The tedious menu systems are still alive and well.

And it's running the same old (slightly tweaked) OS.

And have you seen the price?

Nokia will do themselves no favours if they market this as an "Iphone "killer"

But for those with fat fingers? Maybe ideal - so long as you are not expecting to want to use them much.

Price/performance? Our survey SAYS..... da daaaaaaaaaah

Sparky: I wasn't having a go mate, I was just trying to reiterate the irrelevance of Bluetooth for file transfers.

Yep, typical apple way to look at things : "We don't care how you might do things at the moment, *this* is the *best* way to do things so that's the only way we're going to let you do it". i.e. don't worry that lots of people use Bluetooth to send files, force it have to be done by other methods, even if you don't use that (e.g. email).

No-one is forcing anything....if you don't like the phone you don't buy it...same as any other gadget.

If I needed a2dp then I wouldn't buy an Iphone because it hasn't got the functionality...

Steviewevie: That's right.

If apple were around in prehistoric times, while Microsoft would be selling cheap buggies to all comers with square wheels, apple would have been the ones selling buggies with round wheels.

They would not use square wheels just cos everyone else did - they would use round ones because that is the way to do things, even if the users and creators of square wheeled buggies don't know it yet.

You got it in one.

Progress. Thank god for the likes of apple dragging consumers out of the past and forcing companies to deliver a better experience to consumers.

This is what apple does better than any company in the world.

Erm, I was responding to Tyger's post where he said :

... irrelevance of Bluetooth for file transfers

Bluetooth is far from "irrelevant" for file transfers, it's the way that loads of people do it. I never said that buying an Iphone wasn't a choice, so I'm not sure why you brought that up.

Yep, apple would be selling the ones with round wheels. And they'd have special roads that only the round-wheeled vehicles would be allowed to go on, they wouldn't allow the new vehicles to go to the same places as the old ones even though people wanted them to. You'd have to follow Apple's way of using the new vehicles.
