i agree head gasket failure you'd notice on levels. Think the crux is to find out if its steam or smoke, once thats established it'll be easier to see whats occurring. If its steam looks like its a normality for the IS if its smoke i reckon you are running too rich

Would the nose perhaps be the easiest way to judge that ? i.e. a quick sniff (lol) ? I would have thought that if it was mainly steam it would be pretty odourless, but smoke would smell more of oil/fuel ? Or is it not as simple as that ?

If its smoke from being rich it will smell very petrolly, coolant will be sweet, oils acrid and brake fluid makes your eyes bleed :P
