I just saw on BBC news that Subaru (or at least teh parent company FHI are pulling them out) are leaving WRC, the World of motorsports seems to be imploding, too many years of throwing money for results seems to be backfiring.

There wont be much left if/when they do pull out? There one of the names (imho) that make the WRC what it is today  Used to love going up to Wales to watch the rally but dont have chance these days but do still watch it on the tv quite regular :) And i still think the older models of the scooby were better than the new edition :(

I really like watching WRC as well on Dave etc as well ;) will be a shame to see them go... It's intresting that all the car teams & sports are falling apart yet footballers wages & transfers continue to go up.. Lets see how much Man City will waste in the transfer market an see if they could of ran a F1 Team or WRC team instead lol..

Gutted,Honda out of F1,Seat out of BTTC and now Subaru out of WRC and who would have thought that when we went to Prodrive we were looking at Petter Solbergs car that it would be the last ever Subaru WRC car for their last ever event the Wales Rally GB. :msn-cry:

I got to ask as I'm not in know but how do they all get money out of these sports anyway? Just advertising? or is it something like you finish 1st you get more money like football etc?

More intrested in how F1 make there money as they spend serious pennys and for the lesser teams who dont win or finish most the time do they make anything?

The problem with rallying recently is that it is, frankly, rubbish. Back in the day it was long, difficult stages, lots of night stages - now it is mostly short sections of tarmac and all held in the daylight to maximise TV camera time on the sponsor's logos. How on earth did the once-mighty RAC Rally get reduced to a few short strips of Welsh forest track, half of which are exact repeats of what happened the day before, and some poncing around inside a rugby stadium?

Well done to Subaru for seeing sense and pulling out. Spending a fortune on something that gets only specialised TV exposure and limited fans makes no sense whatsoever. The only reason mass-market manufacturers go racing at all is to sell cars, and they aren't doing well at that right now!

There are prizes for winning, but the main money comes from the sponsors who pay large sums to have their logos writ large along the cars. In F1, that can run to millions for even a smallish logo if it's prominently displayed, especially if it's visible from the on-board cameras.

See here for some generic numbers...

I thought Subaru went for the uglier, worse to drive road version hatchback because with it's shorter wheelbase and overhangs it would make a better rally car.

Now they don't have a rally car, nor do they have a good road car

It's a real shame, I've gotta say it was quite depressing on Top Gear the other night remembering back to the good old BTCC days when there were so many different manufacturers in it :crybaby:
