Lexus Ipod Kit - Is It Iphone 3g Compatible?

Recommended Posts

Evenin'...

Was talking to Lexus Leicester about getting this fitted into my '04 RX (they want 200notes fitted). I know the VAIS Tech. thing seems to be the option to go for but I can't find anyone who could fit it (all the installers said they hadn't worked on a RX before!) PLUS there's the whole warranty thing as I have 2 years AUC cover...

ANYWAY...does anyone have the Lexus one in their car? If so, how good is it, what can/can't it do (playlists, controls, charging, etc.) AND does it work with the Iphone 3G?!

Unfortunately the chap in their service dept. (Martin) didn't know and there were no cars which had it in to trial with my Iphone.

Cheers & much appreciated.

If it's like any other accessories it should work fine for the iPod side of things - I use a load of speakers and stuff that are only iPod compatible and when connceted to the phone it pops up a message saying that it's not designed for the Iphone, so you get feedback whenever the handset is communicating to the cell, you may experience similar with the phone. It wouldn't give you hands free connectivity though - you'd probably be able to hear them through the system if it works like the speaker accessories - bu thte microphone isn't rerouted anywhere so they'd hear you but very quietly!

If it supports things like pause, play, fast forward, rewind etc they should all work - at least they do once again via the remote controls that come with the speaker accessories :)

Not sure about the 3G and lexus iPod kit (Actually it is a Dension kit, so have a look on their site for compatibility)

There is no warranty issue with the Vaistech kit. It simply plugs into the back of the headunit, there are no technicalities involved. Mine was fitted in 15mins flat. I fitted it myself in previous RX (took 3 hrs because I'm not technically gifted and was worried sick about getting it wrong and dropping a screw into the bowels of the car to rattle for ever!) by following instructions posted on this site. The warranty issue is a red herring!

I have an '07 RX400 and have the dealer installed cable - I think they got me for 150 GBP intsalled when it 1st came out.

With the 3G Iphone it will work like it does with other non 3G Ipod accessories. You get a message saying that its not compatible with the device and do you want to switch to airplane mode. If you do not switch to airplane mode the device will play the current track or album you have already started playing. If you have tried your phone on older ipod docks you'll know the score.

So to use my Iphone 3G in my car I select a playlist hit play then plug it to the Ipod dock in the glove box and decline the message on the touch screen. It will then play through the playlist - though you wont have any control over the track selection.

Not ideal, but neither is the phone or the car - I would love blue tooth audio on both. I do have an ipod as well which is my usual device in the car though I do have some good driving tunes on the phone - so its only when I want to listen to something specific

Thanks for the info Dave. Does it also charge the Iphone while playing though and can you still use the CD changer if you want? Apologies for more questions but i've never used an older iPod dock...

I don't mind having to control the song selection from the phone - i was planning to get a cradle fitted that is in easy reach of the driver rather than leaving the thing in the glovebox. Hopefully there will be enough cable to do this instead!

Cheers,

Noman

Yes is does charge and you can change between your disc/dvd and the ipod/iphone. It treats the Iphone as an external CD drive. So you toggle between the disc and Iphone by pressing the disc button on the radio.

Note this is all based on my '07 experience. Not sure the stereos are the same in other years

Well, I was all set ready to order so I rang Lexus Derby and Nottingham just to compare prices. When I asked about the kit they said my car didn't support the iPod kit as it needed the newer (i.e. >2005 facelift) stereo! I explained my finidings on the forum, etc. but they wouldn't have any of it. They said it is not recommended and implied that it will be totally my responsibility if ANYTHING went wrong with the electrics, existing stereo, etc.

SO...i'm a little confused and worried now. Any thoughts?? Perhaps the dealers don't quite know their stuff??

Cheers.

  • 2 years later...

I am not sure whether it is Iphone compatible nor did I ever tried coz I am using interface kit for ipod and syncing it to my lexus car stereo system and I haven't installed lexus ipod integration as I have been given the estimated cost of it to be $600 to $725 and is any 1 sure how could I charge my Iphone 3gs in my car coz a friend of mine jst asked me to buy special Iphone 3gs in car charger as a part of iphone 3gs accessories to be able to charge my phone in car as it lacks built in charger compatible for my Iphone 3gs so is there any alternative or any special lexus accessories that would cost me less than buying an Iphone 3gs in car charger from any shop. Any information will be highly appreciated. Thanks. :)

There are 5 kits that I know of out there

1) Lexus

2) Dension

3) Vais

4) Grom

5) Dice

Personally I think the Dice is the best as it it supports songs by album. Forget the lexus and Dennison which are playlist based and more expensive, Vais is probably 2nd and the grom is a cheap alternative with less Nav screen integration.

Dead easy to fit yourself - search in the forum and you will find someone has posted a step by step guide (link below)

10 min job (2nd time around!!) allow 2hrs first time. Grom and Dice are sub £100. If you want video then Vais probably.

Note none of these support audio over Bluetooth to my knowledge. Fairly sure that the last 3 all support 3g on all mk2 RX radios but you may get slightly less functionality with older Nav units

Fed up of my Error 4 issues, I've decided to get an iPod installation done. Dice is looking the best option. However I'm worried whether it will work if I still have the Error 4 with discs jammed in the headunit.

Any advice out there on this? I don't want to spend cash on teh kit for it not to work. Oh I have teh Mark Levinson Stereo in an 04 RX300.

Hi Steve,

I'm also planning on an Iphone connection. Did some trawling through the sites, all seem to offer systems that plug into the rear of my cd autochanger and therefore disable it. I would prefer, obviously, for both to work if possible. Do you know of any systems out there that would suit me?

Thanks,

Andy
