Question For Those Running The Foglight Tail Conversions

Just a quick one for all of you running the foglight conversion on your IS / GS whichever so that all four lights at the rear are on permanently when your sides or headlights are on.

Do you find many people getting really angry and flashing you?

I've noticed over the last year or so the number of people getting really upset about it and flashing fogs on and off constantly or headlights is going up and up and up!

I can only think it's because they're seeing loads of others on the road and assume that I've got the fogs on - even though they're dual filament and so aren't any brighter than standard rear lights?

I had the same thing once or twice in the IS - had it quite a lot in the Aristo - and even had someone having a go on Sunday night when I was in the Beemer which has all four lights on as standard

These same people also take great offense when you show them the real fogs in action or give them a mouthful - whichever comes first :o

I even had one bellend follow me into Sainsburys the other week as he thought I'd cut him up (he was actually in the wrong lane and drifted across into mine as they'd changed the layout a week before) but he came running over and smacked his wallet into my window - luckily I speed read and so one quick glance and saw they were just credit cards - wound the window down and while he was all het up I just said "no I didn't want another credit card but thank-you for asking"

He had a right go though - at which point I got out the car and realised he was just a small man with big man syndrome after he ran off and locked his car doors and wouldn't talk to me  I made sure to go back and check the layout and I was in the right that time (course I'm not always like that :winky: )

But is it me or are people on the roads starting to have a go and getting really frustrated about problems that aren't actually there?!

The incident in the Beemer was just bizarre - he was right up the back of the car, then overtook, and then just started flashing the rear fogs on his motor - I checked they weren't on - flashed the fronts on and off - and then he kept turning the rear on and off so I just stuck full beam on and left it on until I pulled off at the junction I wanted (was only a couple of hundred metres)!!

i have accidentally left the rear fogs on in the past and i did get flashed then..

I have mine connected to the brakes so they only come on when braking.. people seem to back off V QUICKLY after touching the brakes if they get too close!!

One of the many benefits :D

I did my mates GS and he was getting flashed a bit so I put some 10ohm resistors inline just to dim them a bit. I think the reflectors are too good in them, even though they are only 5w

You need to wire your fogs like mine if you want people to back off:- (Oh, how they do do very quickly too. Added a couple of high quality LED packs on the shelf too. Works a treat.)

Please wait a few seconds for Video to Load!

PMSL mate you are seriously skilled beyond belief!

I'm guessing you added those lights flashing in the window?!

I remember Pete Jenkin put something similar in his car after a JAE and got spied by a copper with them on as he was barging people out the way on the motorway

Yep - there's a couple of high intensity LED banks on the parcel shelf. Seriously, I originally did them because some of the sites I go on, I have to be high vis, and I didn't want to use the magmount flashing nipple.

I did it on my 200 as well... it looked something like this: (made the gif up from a couple of photographs so you don't see the effect - I should have video'd it really.)

If anyone wants the circuit I'll draw it up. Fogs still works as normal of course.

I think they were amazing first time I saw them, I couldn't stop laughing, however I don't think they would be really convincing on an IS200/IS300. They would need to be second gen as most old bill cars are less than 3 years old IMO

which was why I didn't ask Geoffers for a circuit.

Also I would suggest major grief if the old bill ever saw you use them :tsktsk:

I can see I'll be having to check out how bright these lamps are at the back then!

I thought the Japanese cars came like this as standard or has someone fiddled with this then? I know there's a cable hooked in as I covered it up with electrical tape when I took the trim off but I think that's for the foglight addition to these bulbs?

And to show how often I use my fogs I found out a couple of days ago that there is a little LED near the button that retracts the wing mirrors that lights up when the foglights are turned on!!!

I'd always assumed it was something to do with the alarm system but it's just a little indication of when the fogs are turned on - as both come on with the setting on the stalk!

Absolutely. You can't have the reds flashing while in motion.

They are however, ok when stationary. There was quite a bad smash on the M62 not so long ago (2 seconds sooner and I would have been in it - literally in front of me).

Some fella got out of his car, staggered for a bit and fell down in the inside lane! I managed to reverse a bit to put a bit of space to stop him getting pizzafied, blocking off the inside lane.

When the police arrived I expected a few questions but he just said they were a good idea in extreme hazard conditions and told me never to use them while moving though as that would be an offence. Phew.
