I started my lexus IS200 yesterday morning and the Battery was dead so I took the Battery to the garage where the kind my re-charged it for me and then said "why don't you come back with your car once you fitted the Battery and i will check your alternator" so am thinking oh thats nice of him so i went back and he took out some old electrical tester and he tested the Battery and he cam to the conculsion that the Alternator is not re-charging the Battery and it only does when i give it loads of gas. He quotes me £300+vat for a new one and then £180 for a re-condition one.... wow that is a lot of money so I said to him i will let him know. Is there anyway of finding out that the problem is with the Alternator or the Battery? All commnets and views welcomed please

with the engine running u should have about 14v at idle on the Battery terminals, if u have then all is ok.

also check the voltage on the Battery as a rough indication of Battery state, after switching off the car wait about 20-30 mins then check the voltage on the Battery terminals - u should get 12v, dont do it straight after switching the car off as u will get a higher reading.

Ignre what the dash guage says as that is worthless for measuring

Ok, have you replaced the Battery with a new one?, if so there shouldn't be a problem now. Do you know the age of the old Battery? Is the old Battery an original Battery, as its the same one since the car was built? I've read car batteries normally last 3-5 years before they need replacing.

Alternater will be fine (I have never heard of a failed alternater on a IS200 so far). I think the garage is ripping you off saying you need to replace the alternater.

I'd get a 2nd opinion if I was you.

my cars been playing up for the last three weeks, left standing for a while it just wouldnt start,

the time on the dash was resetting itself so i assumed it was the Battery...after turning the ignition on it was showing about 9 volts on the dashboard.

it would start straight away after connecting jump leads, replaced Battery and it starts first time now. not had a problem yet.
