Hi.

I have recently had my 1995 LS400 in for a timing belt change and now it won't start. The mechanic removed the neg lead on the Battery and the immobiliser won't allow the car to start. The only problem is I have neither key fob or immobilser key. I only have the ingnition key. Is there anything I can do to get round the immobiliser?

Thanks

Hi

All sounds a bit dodgy to me, the immobiliser, if fitted, and working before the Battery was disconnected, should work now, what has changed to affect it, simply removing power from it would not make it not work. If you have an immobiliser fitted, not all did, then you will have a chip inside your key that turns it on and off....

As ROYT points out if the cam belt is incorrectly fitted this could cause it to not start, there are special Lexus parts required to change the cam belt to keep the cams from turning when the belt is removed, if these are not used then they can turn and mess up the timing, if it's not this then:

More likely is damage caused to the wiring loom somewhere at the front of the engine, it's not an easy one to do and there are lots of things easily broken especially when they are a few years old and going brittle.

Good Luck

Sounds like the same problem that some mechanics have with GS. Try switching the ignition on to position 2 for 6 mins. This generally allows the immobiliser to reset itsself after the Battery is disconnected. Seen this problem before where a car had been towed in 60 moles for me to do this. Worth a bash

Strange that the alarm doesn't sound when the Battery is reconnected, but you could try this:-

Turn key to Acc.

Disconnect earth.

Turn ignition to 'On'.

Reconnect Earth.

Turn key to Off

Take Key out

Close doors.

Plip lock.

Worked for me after I had the Battery disconnected on my 95 400. I did have the key fob though

I hope this car is not a silver one I've been asked about and the one thats been on eBay all week?

A LS without at least one master key is a stolen one.

Thanks for all the replies.

Firstly it is definitely an immobiliser problem. There is a special key that apparently needs to be inserted into the immobiliser before you dis the Battery. If the key is not inserted and the immobiliser disarmed then this is what it does. Unfortunately we did not discover this until it was too late.

The procedure suggested by 'joned' sounds worth a go as I have seen it elsewhere so thanks for that. Let's face it, what do I have to lose?

Thanks to 'Granite', another one I will try tomorrow.

Thanks to 'bazgtr' for your comments about being on eBay or stolen. I take it you were surfing eBay for more chocalate teapots at the time. 'cos we need some of those too.

The garage that has changed the timing belt has had a Lexus mechanic have a look at it and not even he knows what to do with it. He says they have a Scorpion immobilser on them so I may get in touch with someone who specialises in them.

If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated.

Hi

I believe these were dealer fit at the time and if I remember right Scorpion were either out of business or no help at all, Lexus of course "know nothing".

A half decent electrician should be able to take out the immobiliser and restore the car to Lexus intended spec....

Good Luck

Pete

There are guys that go out and specialise in immobilisers. My neighbour's sporty roadster would only run for a few seconds before the immobiliser cut the fuel. He was at it for weeks trying to sell the car. This guy eventually came out and reprogrammed it.

Happened on my '99 LS400 just before Christmas. Battery ran flat so just thought I would jump start from another car. Engine turns over but immobiliser wont let the car start ( no matter what the cause, if the power to the immobiliser is cut, it needs to reset itself).

Called out the RAC and they simply asked their computer the answer. There is a simple procedure but I can't remember the exact operation. I know you have to connect to a charged Battery, you leave the key in the acc position for, I think ,6 minutes, you turn the key to off, then back to acc, then start.

Sorry I can't be exact, but I'm sure you wont have to start dismantling the engine or immobiliser. I hope I've given you some good news.

Thanks. We tried a version of the 6minute thing earlier with no joy, maybe we didn't quite have the procedure correct so I may try it again. We have AA cover so maybe it's time to try that. I would imagine they have very similar computer equipment to the RAC.
