In 1986 Toyota Motor Sales contracted a renowned PR firm in California to create a name for the new luxury vehicle and division. The name "Lexus" was created by combining two words that depict the vehicle, "luxury" and "elegance."

IN 1988 Toyota were taken to court by Lexis, a legel information network over the use of the name. Toyota even had the names Lexul,Luxel, Lucidia and Lexia as alternatives.The law suite was resolved on 8th March 1989- thank heaven! Fancy driving a LUCIDIA:P
