Should I Get My Service & Cambelt Done Together?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i bought my car with full lexus service history and i know its due for its next 9,000 mile service. The thing is that the last few services although have been at Lexus have not been done every 9,000 but one after 11k and one at 15k. Its currently on 114k and the last service was done at 106K. Should i wait till 120k and then get my cambelt done at the same time?

I want to keep cost down what parts should i be looking to buy in the meantime?

Thanks

Hi

Lexus state 63000 mile replacement for 93 on cars (60000 pre 93) so it's not due untill 126,000 if it has a full history I suspect it was done on time before, check with Lexus they should have the records.

Personally I wouldn't do it before it's needed, only takes some idiot to run into you and write the car off in the next 12,000 miles, or it gets stolen, and you have lost the price of the replacement.

Pete

As Haylands said it was changed on time at 62k by lexus. I'll just go ahead book in the normal service then. Is there anything i should supply myself to help keep the costs down. I am going to be going to a lexus specialist rather than Lexus themselves as the cost of getting it done outweighs against the cost of the car.

Thanks for the replies

Hi

Personally I'd buy all the genuine parts from Lexus and get the garage to just supply the labour, using generic/pattern parts is the best way to reduce the reliability of a Lexus

Which service is due, did it have the 99000 service late or the 108000 service early, if it had the 108,000 one early then the next one due at 114,000 is just an oil change and check over evrything else.

Pete.

Well I rang round to get quotes for the service from the 2 reccomendations garages in London JEM or Albin B Motors. Seems like a good price but i will probably try and get the parts. I have decided to go ahead with the cambelt change so was wondering where is the best place to order genuine parts at a good price.

I am looking for the Cambelt, Tensioners, Spark Plugs (Are these a good price: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...mp;mfe=sidebar),

Battery & Oils

I would say ngk plugs are just as good there are some on eBay for under £40 a set, go to lexus to buy your belt tensioners & water pump. pm cb1300 about labour he was charged £140 to change the belt pump & tensioners. I doubt you will get a better deal than that. good luck Mark

I'm trying to get a trade discount on the parts at the minute but in case i see something on a website how can i tell if its a patent part or genuine? Is there any distinctive features?

Thanks

I got an ADL Blue Print cam Belt kit and a Quinton and Hazel water pump for under £200.

These are as good as or better than OEM equipment and although not that much cheaper than originals they will nonetheless save you a few quid( £30 for me ) Actually the stand-alone ADL Blue Print cam belt is more expensive than the OEM!

i'm about to get my waterpump and cambelt done, and i'm thinking about getting some aftermarket stuff from rockauto in the US. i got all my other service stuff from there before and it was fine.

i just cant justify spending a load of money on a 12 year old car with 120k on the clock!

i was thinking about £100 for the belt, tensioners and pump? then whatever my workmate is going to charge to do it.

The Blue Print cam belt kit cost me about £135 with trade discount from a UK motor factor.

Was getting quotes nearer 200 from some factors.

With the pound being so weak against the dollar its probably not viable to order from the States at present.

yea, just checked and i can get it just as 'cheap' over here now.

do you really need to change tensioners? you can get a belt for about £25 but a kit costs about £135. then there's the waterpump for about £90. + say £200 for labour, thats working out around £400!!

does my head in! i don't know wether to just leave it or spend silly money on a car not worth much more!

It depends how much you value your car, you could get anouther 40,000 miles out of the belt or it could go sooner, as you say a 12 year old isn't worth a lot you can get a good mark 3 for a £1000 or less now, If it was me I would run it till it goes then buy anouther good one & gut your old one for spares for the new one.
