Is200 1-2 And 2-3rd Gear Jerk

Hi all,

Just got myself a 2001 is200 manual after 10 years in BMW 325i coupes (all auto). On the test drive it was a little notchy shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and 2nd to 3rd.

After so long being pampered by an auto I just put it down to my clumsy left foot but after driving for a couple of weeks its no better. Some shifts are smoother than others (especially if done slowly) but from what I have now read it seems to be a pretty regular issue.

Is there anything I can do to improve the situation? New transmission fluid etc (recommendations?) Its only got 85k on it with FSH and being a Toyota I wasn't expecting any issues at all.

Also on a completely unrelated note, the CD changer has a fit playing discs sometimes - needs to be shuffled from disc to disc before it's happy (its the newer system with the CD slot at the top).

Thanks all, looking forward to learning lots from the forum (like how to get some more power - already missing the extra power the BMW's had)!

thanks

Sounds like a typical IS200 manual box to me.

The manual box in the 200 isn't the best, however, there are a couple of things to try and improve it. First, change the transmission fluid- this may help. Other options to try include replace the flywheel and clutch or replace the standard shifter with a B&M short shifter- this improves the throw of the gearchange.

I'm sure a few people on here use a B&M short shifter and they reckon it does improve the gearchange.

Your CD unit sounds like its about to throw the ERR3 message- meaning its had it. If it does give the ERR3 message replace it with a headunit of your choice.

Only way to get more power is to get a supercharger on your car, this is not easy, as they are hardly any avaliable now, the ones that come up for sale (2nd hand) get snapped up quickly.

Oh, welcome to LOC btw.

Thanks kam05, I'll try the transmission fluid on the next service and see what that does.

On the Cd front, my brother had an is200 until last year that was older than mine so had the Cd slot at the bottom. He ended up sending his for repair when it error3'd but we thought that was cured on the newer top slot versions.

Oh well, easy come, easy go. I prefer to play MP3's anyway so will have to get an FM transmitter for now.

thanks
