Number Plates

I am obliged to display my number plate thus:

HJ58 WCY

If I display it as HJ 58 WCY (space between HJ and 58) am I likely to be warned/prosecuted/MOT failed etc?

I'm changing the plate and I wondered about how rigidly the new rules are enforced.

It has to be display 4 and 3, otherwise PC Plod will feel your collar if they're bored one day.

also if you get caught they now tell the DVLA, and they warn you as well, get caught twice and they take the plate out of circulation. so you still own it, your just not allowed it on a car!

I think you'd probably get away with that but is there enough space on the plate to get a gap? I think as long as the second gap is clearly bigger than the first, it probably wouldn't be that obvious anyway :)

Firstly, you are breaking the law by not displaying it 'correctly' It is a (an) MOT failure. It really depends on the Police Authority in your area whether they enforce the letter of the law to a No Tolerance attitude. I have seen unbelieveable plates driving around in Sunny Surrey and have read posts from other parts of the country where the authorities will clamp down on even the number plate screw being in the wrong position.

I could write for hours on this topic as I have just started my 10th bottle of Becks, but I would say, Go for it, and I'm sure that you will be given a warning before any action is taken. If you are not given a warning before any action is taken, please do not quote this post. If you really feel the need to quote any posts, then Steve2006 seems to be the ''one'' to quote just now.

Hope this helps, Graham.

Just to come clean on my reasons for wishing to pursue this. The first two letters of my new number are my wife's initials, the last three are mine. The number will effectively be it's date of birth so it seems a good one to keep. To display it in the way I wish will make it a bit special for us since we only intend to use the car for special days out and travel. I have no intent to deceive. The number will be clear and unambiguous. It will be a hard hearted bugger who seeks to stop me doing it. So perhaps I will go for it. I may not live until the MOT comes up anyway.

And just to complete this - I have ordered two sets of plates. One in the style I want. And one strictly legal. The latter will be kept in the boot as insurance. Will report any problems.

if you use standard plates with just that extra space and you got pulled, that would be unlucky :) and a very bored cop

I have got H5DAS (looks like Hodas my nickname) and always displayed it as H5DAS when it should be H5 DAS.

I think the police are only bothered when you misrepresent characters like 6's to like 0's etc. Although my mate has an Escort RS and he got pulled and fined for having Ford badges on his plates where the GB logo should be!

A lady in the US was sued for breach of copyright because she had a Disney logo on her number plate, she was spotted in one of teh Disney world car parks by one of the legal team!! Fair few years ago now though.

I was pulled for showing my xmas prezzy no. plate as PH51L ** and not PH51 L**. Petty traffic cop on the M1.

I have L40 OPD and for the last three years have had it on the car as L400 PD (guess my initials). I have never had any problems as the font is clear and ANPR can read it.

My local MOT guy insists I put correct plates on when he MOTs it. Says there just maybe some jobsworth around who would report him if the plate isn't spaced properly.

For the past year i've had new plates on, standard font but its 6mm smaller than standard, it has Lexus logo's on each side too. Never been bothered with it. (also passed MoT) A friend of mine rides with black/chrome lettering on his ST and also never bothered by traffic. Guess it depends on time, place, area and luck!

Many thanks for these comments. I have bought three sets of plates. One is a strictly legal set. The other two have a space between the first two letters and the two year numbers. One of these has the legal font. The other is a bold and clear font called 'impact'.

I'll probably use all three from time to time depending on what I'm doing. Since I did my first post I have become more aware of the background to this isssue and the experiences and views on both sides of the divide between eccentrics like me and those that don't understand us. No fair minded person will think I'm trying to deceive anyone. But I will quite understand and will not complain if I do get picked on by the police. They have their job to do. Time will tell.
