Lexus Want £115 To Service My Air Con!

Recommended Posts

Sounds a lot to me. I'd take it along to an aircon specialist to get it done, bet it'd be cheaper. FWIW, our local Vauxhall dealer are offering an aircon service for all cars for rather less.

Does your aircon smell odd when you start up when the cars warm? Mine does, and I've been wondering about a service.

From what I've read on the forums there may be a recall on the aircon, so it might be worth checking it out. Mine smells like a sewer after it's been used, but not while I'm using it.

I thought £115 was a bit over the top!

Not another recall...

Sounds like the same fault as mine. I'll be interested to hear what you find out, so I can point them toward a recall or TSB if there is one.

Well I did mention the recall to Lexus this morning but I'm not due one, so it might be worth giving them a call and just asking if there are any outstanding recalls due.

The place locally was offering 2 services- complete, i.e. drain, regas, test, clean and debug etc, or just a clean + debug which was much cheaper. If your aircon is producing lots of nice cold air, it does not need regassing, so just needs a clean which should be about £50.

If you just need a debug and deoderiser then WYNNS AIRCOFRESH aerosol is brilliant. Costs about £8 plus delivery and does 2 treatments. There are 2 ways to do it. First way is by removing the pollen filter and squirting the stuff in the fresh air intake vents. It goes through the entire system. Second way is by setting the system to recirculate and squirting up the recirculation intake. I used the first on the IS200. It took 10 minutes maximum.

Comma do a good one too for debug and general clean/refresh. About £10-£12 from Halfords,A1 etc.

Great idea... I'll check it, and the Comma version out.

Does it get into the condenser? This is where the bugs lurk I think...

Where is the recirculation intake?

Does it work actually killing the bugs, or by disguising the smell by adding some horrible fragrance and make the car smell like a minicab?

I read somewhere that the Lexus system is prone to trap water somewhere if a drain-hole is not cleared... anyone else got any recollection of this?

It goes through the whole system including the condenser. Don't know where the recirculation intake is. Easy enough to remove pollen filter. There is a smell initially, but that goes quickly and it is then odourless. If your A/C system doesn't leave a "puddle" after high useage then I would suspect a blockage.

I can vouch for the COMMA stuff; VERY good and simple to use. I would also suggest you swap out the pollen filter too.

I would look up a third-party A/C specialist who will charge you circa £50 - and as has been said, unlikely Lexus do the work themselves.

I tried the comma stuff today. It was just under £12 from Halfrauds. I'll give it a couple of days and let you guys know how it perfroms. By the way, it's flippin scary stuff letting that thing off in your Lex!!!

Brave man! Must have been very traumatic, judging by the instructions...

I'd be very interested to know if it works.

Well, I had a problem with my air con, strange smell coming when its turned on...

so after reading this, I headed down to Halfords yesterday and bought the comma stuff. Gave it a go as soon as I got home, at so far it seems to have worked (although it smells strangely like lemons in my car now). Beware though as when its finished it leaves that aerosol stuff in the air in the car which can give you that choking feeling, so make sure that you give the car good time to vent out after using it..

Thanks to the person/people who suggested it, saved me loads by not having to go to Lexus to have it looked at, lets hope it hasnt just masked the smell...

I agree. I definitely don't have the knowledge required to even think about attempting something like that. For £50 you might as well take it to a generic air con servicer. The comma stuff seems to have worked very well. I think I'll just get a new filter and I've saved myself about £90!

Does the car smell unpleasantly 'lemon fresh', or has that worn off already?

Smells fine now mate (perhaps a little bit lemoney). Hold off until tomorrow afternoon and I'll let you know you now what it's like then. It would have been 3 days since I did the treatment.

Edit: Just got home and it smelt fine. Highly recommend comma.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just checked that out. I used the comma stuff and it worked a treat until last week, then the smell started to come back. Its going to Lexus at the end of the month. They were going to have a look to see if there was any damp getting in the car, but I might give them a ring and see if this could be the cause. Cheers brucie.
