Changing Over Number Plates Quickly

Hi all,

As some of you saw I think, I have number plate A10 NYH, which I made to look like A TONY H. To be honest, it didn't take much to make it look like that, and you could easily see what the plate was. HOWEVER>... I got stopped on the motorway and they made me change it (even after a long conversation of them agreeing that it's not that bad and that you can still easily tell the official plate).

Thing is.....I do motorway miles rarely, it's all through towns. And thruogh the towns, the 306's/406's cop cars dont mind about the plates - have been followed and have followed many cop cars and none have blinked an eyelide.

What I want to be able to do is quick change my "legal" plates for my A TONY H plates as and when. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could do this? Maybe magnets? I'm unsure.

Tony the only thing i can think of is velcrose but this would look unsightly when you take of plate.Or them pop fasteners could work the ones like you get on the old convertible hoods

have had wrong spaced nos on my vans for 6 years and never been pulled (touched wood)

had them on wifeys car 3 months and she got pulled on m25

but nice officer let her off !!

they dont like the mis representation when nos are moved or dots added

cause it can cause it not to be recognised properly

once had a traffic warden write my number down wrong :D :D

local haberdasherys should sell white stick on velcro (no im not sure of spelling either)

which wouldnt be too noticable

should we really be advising on how to do something illegal (if it saves a parking / speeding fine i guess its ok) :P :D

Yeah you guys had luck cause I was pulled in town for spelling JOHN O from my plate which is originally J13HNO, and I was given a ticket for £30, The copper even videoed it it in case he said I tried to contest it in court (TO**ER). Don't know but I think the copper was jeaulos cause I was driving such a beautiful car but this was early last year. What I do now is have the plates on velcro pads so, if any copper complains again I will just take them off and replace them with the proper ones in the boot, but I have never had to do that yet. There's always one copper that just wants to exercise his powers, *** knows how many hundreds of coppers I have seen since them and not one has pulled me for it! :D

I got pulled up in a local town with my plates.. i got M44 KRM and all i did wa M4 4KRM, also had the Lexus Logo instead of a GB or something..

The copper even took a Photograph and said he going to report it to the DVLA and that if i get caught again with an illegal plate then DVLA will take the plate and give me the original back or equivalant and sell the other on.

He was said i was the FIRST of the Day and that he caught 15 cars day before :P :P

How about using blank plates and a dry-wipe black marker pen to write out the registration in your preferred style for the day :D

Boring bit:

I expect the proliferation of automated registration reading (automated speed traps, congestion charging...) is causing a clamp down on such plates. The DVLA can fine up to £1000 or take away your registration if it is mis-represented. However, that doesn't stop them auctioning off plates that are only of value when misrepresented...

e.g. C411NON is up at the next auction for £1300, but it's obvious the buyer would put a black screw-cap between the '1's to create another 'N'.

Surely if you come across an 'unreasonable' copper, having the legit plates in the boot won't stop him from giving you a fine <_< If anything, I would imagine it would pi$$ him off even more

easy targets mate - thats all.

sure - you could chase thieves, try and stop the gangs of feral kids roaming around attacking people, etc etc.

And you'll probably get done yourself if you try to restrain someone who has just damaged your car or broke into your house

sorry i've not replied sooner - got caught up in a meeting with work.

There's some very good suggestions there. Geoffers - knew you would think of something flash !!

The velcro I did think of, but was worried it woulf fall off at the front (only about the top third of the number plate at the front is attached to the car).

The poppers idea was quite a good one I think. I'll have a hunt round my local hardware store tomorrow and see what they have. Top idea peoples - thank you.

Oh.....i saw it mentioned somewhere above. The copper who pulled me over said all that about the DVLA taking my plate away from me and £1000 fine. And I TOTALLY agree with you that it doesn't stop the DVLA selling plates at a high value because they only look good when altered. It's stupid I agree - it's because we are easy targets as Matt says. Word of warning - don't say to a copper "go and catch a criminal" :) :) they dont like that.

oh, dont say "bad copper, no donuts" either :)

serious note though - the copper that stopped me was nice enough, but still made me change them. He said normally they take a picture, but in my case they just wrote on a notepad what I had done.

you can allways just remove them

its minimal fine if caught

and you can use lots of excuses like cant find passport so cant buy new one

Shame that is makes us easy targets even for lazy coppers :(

I have been toying with the idea of getting my own private plate (D14 VRY) which would require me displaying it as (D 14VRY as my name is D Lavery) but I dunno if it will just cause me to get pulled everytime I hit the M60....... I suppose I can claim the plate makers just put the space on the wrong side of the numbers

Dunkie......unfortunately I dont think that will work. When I got my "dodgy" plate made, it took AGES of playing to get the spaces right. All the programs which they use do the numbers/letters spacing automatically (unfortunately). Or at least the place I used, and the likes of Halfords, do.

It is a risk - I realise that. If you're going to do alot of miles......and alot of motorway miles at that, then I'd suggest not doing it.

Also - I think I get away with it partly because of the car - it's not a boy racer car. I'd never have put the plate on my last car (an Escort Cosworth) because I'd have got stopped by EVERY SINGLE copper without fail.

I'm gonna give both velcro and push studs a go this weekend I think !
