Bit of a random question, but I was wondering the other day what the difference is between the way a normal engine starts, and the way the engines in hybrids start?

First off they don't make the same noise as a normal engine when they start, and as well as being silent, they also fire instantly. Given the number of times the engine in a hybrid will switch on and off in a journey, it also implies it must be pretty durable so why don't all cars start in the same way?
