Auto Gearbox Oil Change

Hi Guys,

I have an IS200 Se auto on a 53 reg with 41,000 on the clock.

Recently I have noticed a slight 'thud' or shudder when changing up/down in gear at low speeds and only when the car is at full tempreture, not when its cold.

I also noticed that the first gear take off is slightly more noisey than usual. Having said that I am pretty sure that this was evident in the last three IS200's I have owned and may just be a characteristics of the car.

Looking at the full history on the car I see that it has not had a gearbox oil change. Would everyone agree that an oil change will resolve this issue.

Unless anyone else on this forum has any advice to offer.

Has anyone had the same problems and if so how was it resolved?

Also please can you let me know if there is anything other than just the automatic gearbox oil that needs to be changed, such as a internal automatic gearbox metal filter like in some cars which is located under the gearbox sump? Or is it just the gearbox oil on its own.

Finally, when checking auto gearbox oil, is it checked with engine on tick over or engine switched off/

Thanks in advance.

Check your gearbox and diff mountings, for if these are worn they can cause these types of noises. I would recommend you change your gear oil and filter regularly but be sure to use the correct gear oil and have somebody reputable carry this out. One way to check gear oil is to allow the car to reach normal running temperature, then engage each gear manually for a few seconds, put the car in P and while the engine is running, check the oil level. When checking oil see that the oil is not very black, doesn't have a burnt smell and contains no metallic residue as this may indicate wear on some of the internal components.

Not to scare you but "lexus is" auto transmissions do have a tendency of packing up after about 100k kms as was the case with mine.

The best advice I can give you though is DON'T TAKE YOUR LEXUS TO SOME BACKDOOR MECHANIC OR SOMEONE YOU DONT TRUST< ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR AUTO TRANSMISSION>

I hope this helps and hope its something small.

I have not heard before, that auto transmissions on the IS tend to pack up at about 100000km ???? What tends to go wrong ?? Can we avoid it ??

You will need an oil that meets the Toyota T-IV spec such as this one http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60155-gulf-mul...sion-fluid.aspx

Cheers

Just to let you all know I got a gallon of ATF T4 from Lexus at nearly £50 and changed the gearbox oil a few days ago and it seems to have sorted the problem.

I checked all the gearbox and engine mounts and they were fine. :winky:

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Did you change the filter as well and how did you refill the box, was it though the dipstick pipe?

Cheers

Where is the filter located?

And yes, mine had packed up also around 74000 miles. New gear box in it. It changes smoothly, but you always get a bit of a 'shock' when you engage D or R. Never got that with any of my Mercs.

Would this be the gearbox and diff mounts?

What is a "reputable" place to do this? Will the large branded outfits like kwik-fit do, or does it really need to be a Lexus stealer? I know changing the oil is not damn hard. It gets sucked out, a new filter is placed and new oil put in. But a dealer might charge you through the nose for this.

My car is auto and it has ~250k kms on the odometer. So far no problems and no signs of it starting to pack up, still going strong :) It was liek -20oC here today and it was perfectly fine also after some warming up. I have changed the oil few thousands kms ago. As per some advice from the garage, I didn't change the filter (it does filter only big particles so it doesn't get contaminated much).

Do you actually use a different oil than prescribed by Toyota?

On my Evo, I found that I was better off using a more liquid kind of oil for the diffs and gearbox when the car is in Finland than what is prescribed by Mitsi.

P.S. How did your auto transmission pack up? Was it like getting progressively worse and worse or it happened out of sudden? I am getting some shock while changing gears also (I didn't realize it may indicate anything wrong - isn't the shock because of engaging the rear axle?)

I bought my auto IS200 new in 2001 and have done 360,000 km, it still has the original tranny. it’s the best car I’ve ever owned / driven (I’m a retired chartered Mechanical Engineer / rotating equipment specialist and have been driving for 62 years). I believe the 1998-2005 model under priced given the spec and intended market. One way to make the tranny last is to run in 3rd if you do a lot of slow / medium speed city / town driving only use ‘Drive’ for cruising. Ie treat it as ‘overdrive’.

Martins words are encouraging. I have looking at a 99 model IS 200 in top condition. Its 312000 km worries me re the auto. Will see vehicle this week, and check the oil etc carefully. If it changes smoothly and all is good might take the risk of purchasing this one if price is right.
