Do you remember the LS on eBay about 4 weeks ago with the silver painted front indicators and rear light clusters which I took a chance on as my first Lexus and bought it with only 4 weeks MOT left on it. Well, it passed its MOT today. Yippee. But not without a reasonable amount of work and expenditure. We are going away tomorrow so I will update you next weekend on parts, costs, insurance and how I removed the paint from the lights. Here's a taster: Cost New, 1997 'P' reg MK3, £47050, 1st owner 4yrs 44000mls, FLSH, 2nd owner, cost £16200,100000mls, FLSH, 3rd owner, 110000mls, one Lexus service, 4th owner 123000mls, one indie service. I bought it with 123,000 mls. What it needed : washer pump, wipers, side light bulbs, pads F/R, wheel centre cap, passenger mirror partially working, O/S/F spring broken, O/S/R spring broken, pad wear sensors cut, brake pipes, 1 tyre. Back from Belfast via Belper. Because of the amount of paint on the lights I used a Stanley knife blade at an angle and dragged it back across the 'flat' plane of the light clusters, which 'peeled' the paint off in light layers until the colour of the plastic could be seen and then mounted the drill with a polishing pad, in the vice and used cutting compound and polished,polished,polished, yes it took a long time but eventually got there without scratches and applyed a coat of satin black to the rubbers to finish off. Now that the car's looking right, the washer pump was next. When I eventually found the pump I thought there's more wiring there than there was behind the dash on my 1st car. New replica pump from local auto shop £12, eBay £20 or Lexus £74+vat. They are exactly the same except the contact spades ( an easy mod ). Both O/S shockers had broken springs right at the top but managed to get a complete rear shocker which I put on but only a spring for the front which I had fitted to the shocker by the garage I use for the work which is beyond me. I then fitted it to the car myself. Excellent service from a breaker in Lancs (off Autotrader)and one in Kent (off ebay). The variation in S/H spares is unbelievable. I'll fill in the rest in the next couple of days.

It had a silver painted visor stuck to the screen but this peeled off ok. Front side light bulbs and brake pads all round but pad wear sensors were cut by previous owner. Off to the garage where it needed brake pipes and the stub ends were really stuck tight in the unions and that was enough to pass its MOT with an advisory on a stone chip near the bottom of the screen well out of field of vision. When I viewed the car I felt there was plenty tread on the spare (Michelin) but taking it out of the boot at home the dreaded tyre fitters chalk came to light. Tyrespot found it had been badly repaired on the inside but fixed me up with a really good used one for £35. New 17" Michelin £185.

Thanks for those kind words. I 've taken a few pix and will need to find out how to post them. Today I ordered bonnet struts off eBay after checking the 'Toyodiy website' for compatibility. Someone posted a link to this in an earlier topic so thanks for that, its been a great help. I'm busy pulling a MK2 mirror to bits to see if the guts will go into my passenger mirror as mine only works one way at the moment. I've got 17" DHP wheels with one centre cap missing, I could do with new discs and brake pad wear sensors so if there's any out there I would be interested. None of the heated seats work but that wont bother me yet. I feel I've done enough, it needed doing rather than me wanting to do it. Taxed it today so will start to get some enjoyment out of it.

I've fitted a pair of bonnet struts from a GS300 off eBay for £18+p&p. I checked 'Toyadiy' and the numbers were the same and less than half the price of LS400 struts on eBay. Where do they get their prices from. When they arrived there is a slight difference in length but they fit ok and hold up the bonnet. I need a N/S/F head light as mine is holed, still looking for discs and busy with the mirror. Need to find out how to post pictures.

Wear pad sensors very simple to fix. Strip out 50 mm of copper wire from mains appliance flex. Twist it and fold it in half. Feed it through the holes in the brake pad plastic plug then solder the ends onto the wires leading to the plug at the top. Insulate the join and when your QH pads £19.42 a set wear down again and break the wire cut a new length and solder it in again!

Motor factor offered front discs at £42.00 each then discounted them to £40.00

2.5 hours on the drive with a socket set and the cars own jack and a spot of copper grease for the pads/piston interface to stop the screeching.

A mini G clamp to press home the pistons.

All very simple once you get the calipers off. Two bolts a side and you need the wheel at full lock with a long arm on the socket with virtually no off set on the handle due to interference with the flexi pipes.

Don't forget to remove the caliper slide pins,clean,regrease and refit

You'd never get the pads out without taking the pins out unless you might be a quantum mechanic. Good point about greasing them. Also make sure you line the holes up with the spring clip position. Don't forget to put the spring clips back in like I did! only took a minute to sort that out though

17" DHP wheels were refurbished and partly paid for by Lexus as good will gesture for previous owner and were on the car when I bought it. I didn't realise they weren't standard until I looked on here.
