Iphone Nav Mod - Inc Pics And Videos

Recommended Posts

Just completed my Iphone integration mod, which is based on my original AV in car entertainment mod that I did back in 2008.

Pictures and video are at the bottom of this intro

Some of you may remember my thread back in 2008, where I installed an AV unit which gave me 2x AV inputs on my nav screen. I used AV1 as a double DVB Tuner and left AV2 in the

glovebox for an auxilary input such as playstation etc. These AV units were also linked to the aftermarket headrest screens I installed.

After over 2 years of usage, I decided to change things around for better practicality. The changes I did are:

  • Moved Double DVB Tuner to AV2
  • Built a Iphone dock into the ashtray using Apple's AV Composite cable
  • Iphone dock is now the new AV1
  • Created a new custom auxilary box under passenger seat that provides RCA connections to just the rear headrests only allowing the use of something like a playstation on back headrests only as a 3rd AV source with Infrared Headphones. This allows the driver to be using another AV source seperately.
  • And finally, I decided to get rid of the aftermarket headrests as they rattle alot. Now i have integrated a 7" screen into my factory headrests.

What is the controller interface you fitted to start with?

Back in 2008 there was only the one available by Nav Tool. If i remember correctly i purchased it for $299 and the £ was very strong then so it worked out to around £165. But now this same product costs $450 plus the exchange rate isnt great. VAIS Tech do also make their own version and it seems to be much cheaper priced at only $249. But from what i can see on their documentation it doesnt support advanced features like the Nav Tool does. The Nav Tool gives you 2x Inputs, 1x Output (to go to any other external screens e.g. headrest monitors) and it also plays back the factory DVD video on to the external screens.

Links to both of these products are below:

I don't actually see you using the screen to select things. Does that not work? Can you only use the touchscreen off the actual Iphone?

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I'm interested in doing something similar but with an ipod touch and I want to make sure that I can put the ipod in a cubby or something and just use the touchscreen in the center console to select and navigate through the ipod menus.

EDIT: also, do the steering wheel controls still work for things like song skipping or audio volume?

My setup is using a Audio and Video Auxiliary Adapter and not a dedicated iPod/iPhone adaptor. Hence the controls are only available via the phone itself. However, if you want to have full control on the touch screen, with access to playlist of audio and video on your iPod/iPhone, then you should get the SoundLinQ2 (SL2Vi) - iPod Video Interface Adapter that will allow you to control your iPhone/iPod via the nav screen aswell as the steering wheel controls. More info on the SL2Vi can be found here

  • 6 years later...

6 years on from this thread, are you aware of any later products on the market for Iphone to Nav mirroring?

I have been on the VAIStech website but all seem to be out of stock.

Someone in the US managed to get an Android kit, and using an apple Lightning/HDMI cable, mirror his Iphone including all apps onto the nav screen WITH touch ability too.

Now in 2017, I am waiting to hear of a wireless mirroring solution. Perhaps you could connect a Google Chromecast or alike device into the HDMI?

It has built in Android as well as apple CarPlay, ive only just picked up my IS so over the next few months will be going for one!
