Air Con Relay

Recommended Posts

HELLOooooo!!!

Ok so i'm clutching at straws here but...

My air con no longer works so I thought it was low/out of gas.

I took it to my local QwikFit geezers as I get 10% discount and they were unable to fill it???

So I started looking at reasons for this.

Currently I am checking wiring and have so far found out that my fuses are ok, my ac switch is ok but there is no power getting to the clutch on the compressor.

My next test point is the Air Con relay but I really have no idea where the little bleeder is hiding.

Any ideas?

I am also aware that many things can cause Air-con failures including condenser/drier kaput and high/low gas pressure. But I'm eliminating things myself before throwing it at the mercy of a specialist.

Incidentally does anyone know of one in the Northamptonshire/Leicestershire area?

Thanking you kindly. :)

Dont let quikfit anywhere near it, all these guys know how to do is overfill the system with R134a,

Your also right in saying that it could be a multitude of different issues.

When you find the correct relay check that you are definately getting a feed from the A/C switch on the dash,

The simplist way to check that its actually working is to give the compressor a live feed drict at the one wire on the compressor,

the compressor clutch should kick in, the fans come on and the air inside cool? if it works it will be a feed issue and easier to find.

I didn't want to let qwik fit near it but I thought it was only going to be a re-gas and even they can't botch that up with their technical gadget that does it all for them.

I will try a direct feed to the compressor. I'm assuming that as the system has a relay in place its the full 12v goes to the clutch?

Also while I'm here. Is it 12v off the AC switch in the dash or is it lower voltage? Had the tester on all terminals and unable to get any changes on the output from any terminals with AC switch on or off. So might be my switch. Although looking at it it could only be a transistor that could go on the PCB to the AC switch. Anyway I'm rambling.

Will try the direct feed first thanks Jolly R.

Not sure if this will help but .... what Stav said above was right ...

There's a relay called 'A/C comp' in the small relay compartment under the bonnet.

That's the long thin relay compartment behind passenger side headlamp near the washer bottle filler ...

There's 5 relays in there - starting at the top are 3 fan relays in a triangle, then the 'A/C Comp' relay then the front one is the 'Dimmer' relay.
