can you recommend anyone?

Preferebly in the Merseyside area

I did mine last week, it's ice cold. tested it's 3 degrees!

in your area? the best is try some of local indy (google it), I did consider to use "nationwide" or "quick-fix", after spoke to someone used them before, I changed my mind.

I paid £44 for a full Aircon service.

good luck

I paid £49 at kwik fit on the weekend to do mine, now ice-cold, the machine checks for leaks in the system. Normally won't recommend kwik fit but since all the guy have to do is hook up the hi and low pressure hose to the machine and 45 mins later it done so I think this is something kwik fit can manage.

Went to some local air con specialist in the city centre. One of those guys who seem genuine and passionate about the job.

But he want £60 for it.

That ok?

That depends if you want a guy who knows what he's doing or a half trained monkey working on your car. The kit that Kwackfit use are very limited in the way that they detect leaks... It has no chance of detecting anything other than a very large leak and if the car requires anything more than a recharge, then they just shrug their shoulders and send you on your way..

£60 is a good price for a decent guy to work on your car...

For the matter of the interest, I did contact both Lex and Toyota in B'ham

Lexus £99.99 inc VAT

Toyota £99.98 inc VAT

however, I am surprised to learn from Toyota " As the AirCon unit is a sealed unit, it shouldn't lose any charge over the time at all!, you must have a leak Mr, we will investigate and inform you the cost of the parts and labour Mr."

He he he he

I had my aircon recharged a few years ago at my Lexus dealer (around £85 at the time I think) and they said the opposite - I asked could there possibly be a leak as I didn't think it would need a charge so soon, and they said it's perfectly normal

ok, so I took it to this guy in the city centre, hes an a/c specialist so knows his stuff.

Basically, the a/c compressor is nackard. He charged it and tried it but it smelt of burning because the compressor has seized up.

So I need a new one of them for a start.

Can anyone help us with that?

New compressor and clutch will set you back about £300+VAT but you'll also need a new drier, lubricant and a system flush to remove the guts of the old compressor from the pipework... I'd also budget to replace the expansion valve as you may as well replace it when the evaporator is flushed as it would have to be removed as you cannot flush through the valve..... Not cheap but this is the best way to fix things and make sure that they stay fixed for years to come..Sadly not a cheap option

Seen plenty of cars that have had £20 recharges... they're the ones that need new compressors.

When I got my car the aircon worked fine but when the car was repaired the aircon had to be drained. anyway, i got it recharged a while back but the compressor wont kick in so I dunno whats going on. I posted on this a while back I think but couldnt get to the bottom of the issue. considering the aircon worked before then I doubt the compressor has died. could someone help me? I didnt have any form of burning smell btw like above

Check from the compressor backwards... do you have 12 volts at the clutch, what is the resistance of the clutch coil.. If you have 12v at the clutch, then it is the clutch that is toast or may need the gap setting.. if no 12v then trace back to the relays is the switching to the relays working, is there power to the relays, check the trinary switch, check the evaporator temperature switch, if all these are ok, then you'll have to delve into the HVAC control.... FIRST of all though there must be at least 30psi in your aircon system to trip the trinary switch.. has it leaked? Are the fuses ok? Get yourself a decent meter and a wiring diagram.

It's second hand and been cut out of a scrapper so you can't expect it to be nice and shiny.... The two ports on the compressor should be perfectly clean and be of bright metal... flip the compressor upside down and look at the colour of the oil that runs out, it should be clear, or have a green tinge to it, NOT dark, black or aluminium coloured. if you shove your fingers in each port and turn the centre section of the clutch, one should suck and the other should blow, the compressor should turn very smoothly with no end play. in the clutch or flywheel... if you connect the clutch to 12v whilst off the car to check if the clutch engages, could save you some cursing later on.. Are you cleaning the aircon system out to remove the guts of the old compressor from the pipework before you refit the replacement compressor?
