Hello everyone, im new to the forum having bought a 1996 Lexus LS400 last week, I have howvever been around Toyota's for years and still own a Toyota MR2 turbo and Toyota Camry v6.

Anyway back to the lexus, the only thing that doesnt seem to work on it, is the air-con, with the engine started and the a/c button pressed, the engine note doesnt change, neither does the idle of RPM, and the blowers dont get any colder... so it obviously doesn't work, wheres the best place to start to diagnose whats at fault?

Next questions:

what engine oil do you guys recommend?

what autobox oil?

rear diff oil?

Cheers :)

You could run a search on these topics. AC just been on and oil a while back. There are online manuals discussed a couple of posts ago.

Welcome is all pretty easy but expensive esp. AC Could just need filling or its blocked.

ive been searching for hours on the ac... nothing specific comes up with regards to idle etc. nevermind

If its the same as earlier LS's the a/c compressor wont run if the refrigerant has leaked away.

Have it checked and recharged by a specialist, not any quick fix recharge.

The quantities of coolant and oil are critical, and the system will need evacuating etc.

Have the AC checked by a professional outfit ( they all need to be registered now) not a fast fit place, apparently even Lexus are doing some deals at the moment so may be worth giving them a call.

Engine oil is recommended at 5w-30 semi or fully synthetic, use a genuine filter.(I use Texaco Havoline fully syn at £16.95 from Morrisons)

Transmission fluid is Toyota Type IV only.(dealer only at around £45.00/5 ltrs)

Diff oil is Hypoid gear oil SAE90.

These are based on the 1994 model handbook ( have a look on eBay for one for yours)

Finally a good resource is www.lexls.com have a look at the tutorials section.

Oh nearly forgot welcome to the LOC :D

Hi

See my comments in this thread.

Obtain the services of a specialist vehicle a/c tech. From your description, I'm thinking the compressor has had it. There are plenty of breakers out there but try our very own member Benfur 1st but only after the tech has made a diagnosis.

Oh, and be grateful you dont have a newish Lexus. They tend to have clutchless compressors and wear out quickly as a consequence and at £1700 it aint fun.

Please let us know how you get on.

I just had my A/C service at Lexus (Woodford) - they had a special - £69. It runs fine and cold now but Lexus told me one of the readings was not spot on and they suspect a failing clutch. I presume that there is no fix for this (the a/c clutch) so can you let me know how I contact Benfur? Many thanks.
