Timing Belt

Recommended Posts

My cars comming upto 90k miles and doesnt seem liek the belt has been changed. Called The dealer in carddif and quoted me £400 parts and labour. Is that a fair price and also whats the average cost for a standard backstreet garage to do it.

thanks Mo

Parts for the cambelt (belt, idler and tensioner) cost about £120-£150- the rest is labour. £400 is probably the going rate at a Lexus garage. A Toyota garage might be a bit cheaper?

It might be wise to spend a bit more now and get the waterpump changed as well (even if it isn't leaking now)- save on future labour costs.

Hi, my opinion is £400 from a lexus dealer is a good price ;the genuine belt kit is approx £145 i did my own earlier this year.I would keep away from 'back street garages' as if the job is not done correctly it can cost £1000+ to rectify any damage ;A good independent mechanic is an alternative (if you can find one ) but I think you would only save £50-60 .I also agree at this mileage the water pump and bypass O rings should be changed at the same time because if they give trouble with the onset of winter it will cost another £400 to fix

I agree. The consequential loss of letting other garages do it is too great. £1,000 is probably an underestimate. For this job you need a proper Lexus warranty on it. They not only do the job, they fix a sticker to the cam cover for future buyers. It will be one of the first questions you will be asked when you come to sell.

Thanks guys. As mentioned i will be doign the water pump at the same time. I have tried contacting a toyota specialist but still waiting on thier call back. Its just a hassle to get to my closest lexus dealer. The guys said it would be £600 for the belt and a service. Does anyone know what is involved in a 90k service?

90k service is a basic oil and oil filter change and a general inspection/check up of the car.

On the general inspection, additional work may get flagged up such as worn balljoints, low discs/pads etc.

Thanks mate :D Yeah its had a new ball joint disc's and pads already :-D i better start gettign the money toghter for the belt and pump.

I had mine done at Lexus coventry - all lexus dealers work are covered by a 12 month warranty (thats what they told me) and you'll get a nice new one to drive round in for the day.

cant remember how much mine cost - but that sounds like a good price to me mate

mine needed doing because of the age rather than the milage - and its one of them things not worth putting off. lol

How olis your car mate? aww yeah they said they owuld drop me off into town and pick me up but i would prefer another car as i would have to travel. They said they would service and do the belt all in one day.

mines a 2001, cant remember exactly but i think they said 7 years or 100,000 to me - and they said mine had never been done so i had mine changed at 72,000 on the clock - but at least it won't need doing for a while now :)

I Use my car a lot, so when i book it in i always say "would it be ok if i came to collect 1st thing in the morning?" and they usually are fine with this- provding ive booked in advance- understandably they dont always have loan cars all the time.

but the ones ive had have been awesome -

Is220d

Rx400H

is250 Sport

well worth the extra just to drive one of them for the day - i wouldnt be able to hire any of them cars if i tried due to age restrictions. lol :winky:

Ive heared many things about diffrent times and milages in regards to the belts some mechanics say 10 years or 90k on these cars and others say 5 years or 50k miles. Non the less i will be gettign mine done. I woulodnt mind taking the new lexus for a test drive so arrange to have it while my cars in the garage :D

Lexus started off with 100,000 miles, then reduced it to 60,000 miles. I can't remember where I saw it but a belt with 80,000 miles was a sorry specimen. It was half the original width and ragged. You definitely wouldn't drive anywhere with it. Basically if you have done 60,000 (6 years) and you intend to keep the car you might as well get it done now. If you intend to sell it sooner rather than later you will need to get it done.

I remember when i asked about this to the Lexus dealer and they said 50k as well... should i just ignore that and get it done at 60k? my current mileage is 41k at the mo
