I seem to remember reading about it sometime ago, ive had the IS250 for 3 weeks now, and i can hear a slight ticking from the engine from outside the car (not inside though), it's not a tappet noise, i dont think, is this normal or not, its a 57 reg?. ta.

Perfectly normal as it's the petrol fuel injection system you can hear. The high pressure fuel pump mounted on the valve cover (cam lobe driven) makes a loud ticking. The high pressure injectors also make a more obvious click than standard injectors.

It's not just the IS250, but just about any car with a high pressure direct injection system.

This is a wear issue, as the car does not make this noise when new. I will be insisting on a new fuel pump on its next visit as the noise does get louder over time.

My is250 has around 56k on it, its had a new engine because of a knocking noise (Piston Slap)which was pronoused as perfectly normal initially.

I don't think it is a wear issue. I had a MY 10 IS250 with 2K on the clock while mine was in service couple of weeks ago, and guess what? It had the same tapping noise as mine with 30K. When I asked the service manager about that was told that all of them have this tapping noise. So I do agree with Tango.

The injection system ticking can be heard from new. It's not a problem, it's absolutely normal. The ticking noise on my IS250 is the same now at 47K miles as it was when I had it from new. My IS-F has a similar ticking from the injection system, it just comes from lower down on the V8 engine.

But do let us know how you get on with insisting on a new fuel pump

This has nothing to do with piston slap, or the cold rattle experienced by some owners (for which Lexus are aware of and have a TSIB for).

I was told they all have the piston slap noise, when they removed my engine one of the cylinders had worn oval.

Listen to the loan cars when you have yours serviced, they are usually lower mileage and in my case all are quieter (fuel pump wise).

Ive had this car from new, 98% of my driving is constant motorway speeds for 90 mins at a time, so its not my drving style.

Piston slap isn't normal, and I wouldn't be happy if I had it. To say they all have piston slap is a joke. The courtesy car (2009 IS250 SE) I had on Wednesday this week while my IS-F had its service did not sound any quieter or noisier than my current IS250 SE-L MM that I've also had from new. Sounds like you've been very unfortunate with your car.
