52/2003 Is200 Full Service + Timing Belt

Recommended Posts

I needed this work done quickly as I'm driving up to London on Thursday, so I just took it in to the garage where I had my MOT done a few months ago.

I told them I needed the 60,000 mile service and that at 6 years the timing belt was also due. When they started work, they found the water pump was leaking so I told them to replace that too.

I've just had a call to say it's ready to collect and that the total is £859.84 all in!

They told me the service was £308.08+VAT and the rest was £469.58+VAT, which included the timing belt, tensioner, idler, water pump and anti-freeze.

Obviously I'm an idiot for not getting a wrtitten quotation but I expected it to be under £500. I had the cam belt, tensioner and idler down at around £130, and the water pump at around £100, which means they've charged me ~£200 labour to fit them, PLUS another ~£200 labour for the rest of the service.

Am I being naive or is this wildy overpriced?

Sounds about right if you took it to a lexus garage, cost me almost 400 quid just to have the timing belt done.

Main dealers charge labour at about £80 + vat per hour, independents at £50 +vat per hour. This figure varies across the country. So £200 might only buy you 2 hours labour.

i paid £850 in lexus for all the above plus sparkplugs, coolant bypass hose, brake fluid, air filter pollen filter, coolant etc etc - independants in my area were quoting as much or more for the same job - one even tried to charge £200 for a pattern part waterpump in the price - might be as you say a bit too late to argue the toss now though - at least you should have piece of mind and a reliable car for the foreseeable

Had mine done at Lexus Sheffield three weeks ago.

90k service, timing belt and tensioner replaced (water pump didn't need replacing) for a tidy sum of £461.:backofnet:

hi had mine done a while ago by an independent garage in northampton that i have used for the last 15 years and it cost me £595.23p - this included vat, labour, cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, oil, plugs, antifreeze and oil filter.Having said that it is actually cheaper to change a cambelt on a IS 200 then it is on a renault scenic

I recently bought a 2003 model and it has a full Lexus service history. The car has only covered 33000 miles.....i wonder if they did all this work regardless seeing as it is supposed to be replaced after 6 years?? I may ring them, heres hoping.

Not looking forward to forking out that sort of dough if not!
