Car Insurance For New Drivers

Our oldest son is about to turn 18 and has just passed his driving test. Someone at work is selling a 2001 'Y' Fiesta 1.2 for £750.

Perfect first car for him. So I go to cunfused.com and check out insurance. The cheapest TPFT quote is £3200. How the hell can an insurance company expect to charge this sort of money for a £750 fiesta? The most expensive quote was just over £15,000.

Does anyone know of any insurance companies that do cheap insurance for new drivers?

hello,

I went through exactly the same thing. When i was 18 I acquired a rover and was quoted £2400 for my first year.

I went through Quinn direct which were very good, if not try tesco car insurance - they used to be reasonable.

hope this helps

You'll probably find it's the choice of car. The Fiesta is a popular car for young drivers so the premiums are sky high. As strange as it sounds, try doing a quote with a more obscure choice of car for an 18 year old.

After I passed my test I tried to get insurance for a 1.3 Escort and it was stupidly expensive. Opted for a significantly more powerful 2.0 Sierra and it was quite cheap simply because the Sierra wasn't classed as a "boy racer" car.

I found out that it is £950 cheaper to insure a 1.0 Volkswagen Lupo. But still £2300 which is just not an option.

would you be able to put one of yourselves as a named driver to bring the premium down further? even if you dont have any no claims, my dad lowered mine last year by £200 and he never drives it and has no claims and 3 points

i went with quinn on a 1998 rover 200, cost 770 tpft

FORGET ABOUT ALL THE SEARCH ONES, THEY ARE ALL OVER PRICED!!

shop around the old fashioned way and play companies off against each other

This is very true - use the phone. Also if you know an Insurance Company you trust, ask them which cars/models would be cheapest to insure. Then try for the best car/insurance combination. Unfortunately, all the statistics show newer drivers do cause claims, but I think Insurance Companies use this as an excuse for premiums which are out of proportion - after all, they also all claim they don't make any money out of car insurance but strangely seem to compete really strongly for the business.

Very true, not to mention that

me - "oh its only £300 - not bad at all"

them - "whats that? you want to pay monthly? no problem thats £815.23! whats your sort code sir"

or some wouldnt even give you the option, you had to pay it in one - hence why this year i ended up with tesco - purely because they provided the cheapest qute based on paying monthly.

insurance premiums have gone up this year.. my renewal came thru at £1200 compared to last year at £470. MORE THAN DOUBLED even though i got 7 years ncb. i wouldnt dare tell them my mods...

Not a wise move. Avoid an accident because you could find yourself uninsured which at the worst could lead to criminal charges.

avoiding an accident is easier said than done, hence the term "accident" its best to either declare or un-mod to be safe, I know one or 2 people with various mods who haven't declared and I fear the day will come when it all goes wrong, and it'll be costly if it happens

I know someone who has recently had an accident, writing off both cars involved. each were heavily modded "boy racer" cars.

The insurance company has investigated the whole thing - and not honoured any of the claim. In fact they are taking one lad to court - they seen the videos of him driving like a Chump on his facebook ! along with a lot of photos detailing mods etc which weren't declared.

Personally i think If you dont declare them mods you taking a serious risk (however small they are) that it might well void your insurance.

with insurance companies facing harder times - eg more fraudlent claims, they're gonna try and find a way round anything they can

I contacted Churchill when I was 19 and I had my induction kit on my first IS200 - they asked me how much it cost etc and charged me £24 extra on the total premium. not bad at all considering :)

if your son is looking for a cheap runabout i recommend a 1.0l micra. ive had many micras and and they really are the best small car there is. if he's looking for a quickish small car a 1.3 micra is perfect. yes he may think driving a micra is an embarrassment but they engines go forever when looked after. all you need to watch is for rust around the sill and crossmember areas. also the SR and SUPER-S models are the best (93-98)

It's crazy for new drivers at the moment. You could always try a few small things to gradually decrease the price. Like adding you to the policy as a names driver, reducing the yearly mileage (don't lie though), keep it in a garage or something.

A friends son managed to get a good deal with Budget insurance, not sure how long that was ago though.

im on admiral they pretty good adding a second driver who is older and pref female drops price massively for me i get quotes 3000 with my mum on it 1800 limiting the millage is always good and ringing up is allways better than online quote as they ask you more questions so you can make get extra 100-50 quid off but you have to spend ages on the phone ringing round but it worth it.

Sprinter that seems about right. i am 22 2 years no claims and am paying £1300 which is £200 dear than last year

for no reason. I do however live in liverpool which is an expensive place to insure.

as for mods i am unsure about this. i once had an accident(not my fault) in an astra i had mods: wolfrace alloys spoiler tints, smoked rear lights and bmc induction kit. i was paid out but on the insurance report it said "note alloys are WOLFRACE". i was still paid out for the wheel i just took the induction kit off.

i think it depends on your insurance company and what came on the car as standard. my current IS has the multi spokes sport grill tints and a lip spoiler and if i was involved in an accident i would certainly not accept an insurance company fobbing me off because the wheels are not the 5 spokes or the grille is not a normal one because its still a standard lexus part and could have been fitted from dealership as an upgrade. i supose it depends on the mods.
