40k Service, Ouch!!!

 Share

Recommended Posts

Well, just picked my car up from the local dealer. The bad news, 40k service cost just under £1100, the good news, I didn't pay for it and I got to drive a GS300 for just over a day. Interestingly enough, while my car was in for the service, the dealer I bought my car from has offered to swap my car for an IS300 of same spec for 13k, buying mine back for the same price he sold it to me. Now, after 13k miles in 3 and a half months I'd be crazy not to just to avoid some depreciation, but for 13 grand, I can buy a weekend play machine.

How much have other people paid for services?

Work done:

2 New tyres for front

4x Brake pads/discs

Materials

Alignments (there was a posh name for this, which made it quite expensive.)

Few minor things like replaced Battery on key fob/ screenwash/ oil

Then obviously labour and VAT

What I never understand, is that surely when you buy a car, you own all the pieces as well. So why don't you get a big bucket of components in the boot when they've replaced them. Or even show you them if they're too big to fit.

Once when I had a company car, I was told that I'd cracked a sump pretty severely so it had to be replaced. I live near a lot of speed bumps but I don't ignore them. I never saw the old sump so surely the garage can just say that if they know the type of streets where I live?

Just the other day, my friend put his car in to a local garage to have any necessary work done to pass its MOT. A bill arrived but didn't need to pay it until after the MOT was conducted at the same place a few days later. Get this, on test day, someone rang him to say his brakes were too worn out to pass and need changing. He replied saying "Well thats funny isn't it?", "Why?" said the garage. "Well you did the f#@£ing work to pass my MOT." After a long pause they said they'd ring him back, which they didn't. The brakes were never mentioned again.

I'm not doubting the work had to be done on my Lexus, but you have to wonder when you don't get to see whats wrong with things.

Anyway, my company pays for services, perks of directorship.

I did get offered the old air filter back when I took my first car (a mk II escort) into the garage to be tuned. Think bees. Think of the honeycombs from a hive that are dripping with sticky honey. The air filter was like one of those honeycombs except that it was black and sticky. :o I don't think it had been serviced for a while. Needless to say I declined.

I'm sure the Lexus dealer would provide you with the old parts if you requested them (you might have to ask in advance), but I guess your average Lexus customer would be horrified to see the old parts if their spotless boot!

I imagine the tyres pushed it up quite a bit, they could have been £500 of the service.

I have to say thats expensive. My 40k service is due in around 6 months, however, I didn't realise it was going to be that expensive. :(

Oh well, looks like I'll just have to save my pennys...;)

Maybe you could get the dealer to do the actual service required by warranty, but get any other work done elsewhere (especially the tyres!) but in mine they changed the brake and coolent fluids, rear brake disks and pads all round. These might not have to be done by the dealer. That should cut the cost down.

Holy cow thats expensive, my 40k was about £200 and my 50k (which included front pads) was £247.

How do you get through the brake disc's in 40k miles? I don't drive gently and there's very little wear on mine at all.

I never, ever buy tyres from a dealer, they charge way over the odds. A set of tyres from an independent (read small) tyre place is usually the cheapest option.

My cousin used to have a BMW M3 with 18" BMW alloys fitted. He was quoted £332+VAT for new Goodyear tyres from Bridgegate BMW in Derby (285/35/18's) and he managed to get them from an excellent local tyre place called pit stop tyres in South Normanton (01773 863030) who got him some identical tyres for £129 all in.

The morale of the story is don't buy anything you don't have to from a main dealer

red6, maybe you could tell us what tyres they fitted and how much they charged, and for the wheel alignment. I've never got my tyres from the dealer either but I'd be interested to hear how much they charged!

As for how I got through brake disks in 40k miles I've no idea. They didn't show me the old one's so I don't known how worn they really were.
