Do Not Sell My Personal Information Jump to content

If anyone's interested, I'm selling my winter tyres on eBay at the moment. I bought them last year and they made an amazing difference in the ice and snow - the difference really was like night and day... But the Alfa takes a different size, so they are no good to me this year.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link to the auction on here, but they are the 'set of 4 GT Radial' ones located in Tonbridge! 235/45 17, size-wise...

cant see on eBay. are they on wheels? any more info on tread, cost etc.

PM set with item number was looking at them today wrong size for me.

Well had plenty of snow and ice so far, and no problems (other than other drivers).

Just taking my time and being easy on throttle and steering. The snow setting seems to help a bit, but no real problems to report.

It could definatley be a bit lively (if i drive like a BMW driver) but the Lexus is a bit more grown up than that. (Cue plenty of people defending BMW drivers)

Could do with the snow going soon though.

There is only 2 times I have ever hated driving my Lexus cars and both times were when it snowed. It's not the moving part of driving - it's when you need to stop that they are just uncontrollable. My LS and GS were both pretty much the same. Crawling along without any throttle but touch the breaks gently and you are off - sliding until you hit something. (luckily for me it was always a kerb). For that reason I won't be driving my SC anywhere if it's snowed.

Guess it's mainly due to the weight and large tyres - rather than a fault of the car as such and any other car with same will behave in a similar way.

Thought I'd register to share my experiences of my GS in the snow with premium winter tyres.

I've written numerous articles on the subject on my website - feel free to have a read.

In summary, winter tyres rock and I will drive on them for 6mths a year from now on.

Thank you for the various write-ups: not only interesting but also useful reading.

My own experience: fitted the Vredstein Wintrac Extreme in September on my LS400 and saw an immediate improvement in handling in the wet. First chance the use them in the snow: we had about an inch of ice with snow on top(flat surface) - no problems with moving off and no sideways sliding, braking taking a bit longer than usual but completely controlled. So far then I am completely satisfied and would highly recommend these tyres (by the way mine were cheaper than the standard summer tyres and no noticeable change in noise levels). Will keep these on through the year, I think.

P.S.: These tyres (at least in the 225/60/16 size are H rated meaning up to a maximum speed of 130mph; I was advised of this by Vredestein directly).

excellent reading, very interesting stuff tbh - as you say even a 4x4 benefits from the right tyres which is the rather expensive purchase im looking into at the moment so your articles were very helpful,,thanks for taking the time to post up

My other car is actually a Toyota Urban Cruiser AWD which I used to get about in the snow last winter.

In the middle of the ice and snow this time around, I actually chose to go out in the Lexus. Overall it's safer. The 4WD gets going OK, after a bit of diff-locking etc. but it's cornering and stopping abilities just can't compare to the Lexus on the winter tyres...even though it's 4WD.

Some more interesting info from Evo mag, here -> http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/248524/winter_tyres_tested.html?CMP=NLC-Newsletters&uid=21c509ebe0c2b48d0fa5eb1823fd5580

i know what you mean , stopping on steep hills with ice underneath and snow on top is still a nervewracking business at times, no problems ploughing forward or turning for me yet but even on a 4x4 as you say tyre choice is so important whiich is why im researching as much as possible to get the right set up for the conditions i face and expect this winter - gonna cost at least £700 i would expect for me
