Fog Lamps When It's Not Foggy

Thanks for your, in your words AMAZING wizdom. I have a motor traders policy and as such am insured to drive any car modded or not with out having to inform my insurance company of what were or when i am driving. My insurance company are not interested in what i drive as long as its owned by my (having bill of sale is enough) or given to me in conection with my work. I am in charge of any car whislt in my care and subject to any rules of the raod ie fines for bald tyre speeding and such like, but they cant hold me responsable for any modification done on any car. Its a pretty standard policy and if it was your way any modded car would never get repaired serviced or mot tested as the mechanic wouldnt be covered to drive it. So yes i believe i drive a car with an illegal mod but as my insurance are not bothered and neither are the police,i wont be in a rush to change my windows.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood. I thought you were saying that YOUR personal car, ie registered in your name on the V5 was the car you were saying was illegal. I would still think however that driving it knowingly with illegal tints could invalidate the policy, insurers are getting a lot more canny these days and will avoid paying if they can and illegal tints might well be a good enough reason for them

Dont worry Dave1 technically i think your right. Theres a fine line between my car and a car owned by me or my company. Its probably a very grey area. I am insured on a traders policy ( 2 actually, my work also covers me anytime night or day) to buy and sell cars or repair cars. MY car,the lexus,is registered me but at the bussiness address. Its probably a company car but as its my company then i guess its my car. It gets explained to me by my acountant its something to do with income tax, company car tax and second job tax. I think legally the car belongs to the company and is used by me for bussiness, so its "lent" to me for my bussiness. Any mail for the car and comes to my bussiness address but its still down to me to deal with it. Bit technical but it legal to do according to my accountant.

FIL.... Don't come driving round South Yorkshire then. :winky:

The boys in blue around here do test the tints with a bit of kit.... Light level meter??? and a mate fell foul 2 weeks ago. He's had to have them removed and had a fine as well. He's the third i know of in this area that's been stopped and has had the tints fail after testing by the coppers.

Right who's for a discussion on number plate fonts??? :whistling: :D

Cheers

Dave.

Wow, that stirred up quite an hornets' nest didn't it?!?

A couple of points of clarification (as I'm not going to reply to all 6 pages since my original post).

I was dismayed to see that it was an IS200 in particular that was driving around with his "chav-lights" on, because one of the qualities I liked about my IS was that it was a quality car. I didn't feel as though I had anything to prove in it. Or at least certainly not "hey look at me, my car's got front foglights that work (same as 90% of other cars on the road, but I'm just too stoopid to find the off-switch again)", anyway!

The more owners that start adopting the above quoted attitude, the poorer a reputation the brand as a whole will have, and the worse it will reflect on the remainder as owners. Take my original parallel with Citroen Saxo's - I could have said BMW or Audi drivers if I was quoting Clarkson I suppose. After all who now doesn't think "ah look, another c0ck" when they spot one behaving in the expected manner? Yep, stereotypical maybe, but you all knew exactly what I was on about. Oh and I commend the vast majority for coming out and applauding my sentiments. It's restored my faith in the forum a lot, because I was starting to think it was all getting a bit too "pimp my ride" for my liking. If we're lucky, it may even have educated a few and converted them to the "(fog)Lights Off Brigade". ;)

That's why my initial tack was to point out that "it's naff (and by the way illegal)", as I felt it would have more of an effect on the mentality of most than "it's illegal (and by the way naff)". Because they probably think nothing of wandering across lanes without indicating while talking to their homies on da mobile, so what's one more ikkle rule going to matter...?

Enright, i totally get where yor coming from now. You dont like fog lights because in your opinion there chavey and you have seen a Lexus with fog lights on and you thought you would distance yourself from that and not want anyone to think you was chavey. Ok i wont ever call you chavey. Dont worry yourself no one thinks your a chav at all. Dont talk wet man its a car . A car says nothing about the man driving it. Its a car. Driving a bmw or audi makes you a c0ck because clarkson says it does? The only people that believe that at c0cks themselves. Your only problem seems to be not wanting to to be deemed a c0ck like a Saxo driver because you saw someone in a lexus with their fog lights on and wanted to distance everyone from that. Personally i think anyone who relates himself a beter or worse person because of what car heshe drives is a c0ck.

your concerned about the reputation of the "brand" because of having its front fog lights on. I wonder if i could sort that for you.

I will contact Lexus UK tomorow for you, pass on your concerns, they may stop producing cars with fog lights on after all they wouldnt want to loose sales by people not wanting to buy Lexus any more now that people are driving with their fog lights on.

Dont make me laugh mate is a car not a way of life. No one actually thinks "oh look a Lexus with his front fog lights on, i wont buy one of them, there all chavs"

cheers dave1. just out of interest have you seen how tinted is legal??. i not joking either. legal tint is slightly less tinted than the standard tint in the back of a IS sport. So 1 shade darker than legal is about the same as a standard tint. I doubt any copper would even notice. very dark and one way tints i can see them pulling you for but seriously doubt they would even question my tints. A legal tint is like cling film its hardly even worth bothering with.

Number plates now oyu mention them are very interesting. There was al sorts of stuff about them brought into the mot test,,,,,,,,,,, and then took straight out again. Again as above theres ways round stuff that police wont even notice. A customer of mine has a 81 bently t2. Hes been driving it around for 10 year with illegal black and silver non reflective pressed steelnumberplates on. Hes never even been stopped not once. Like i said before theres alot worse crimes out there, I know this is probably real bad thing to say but go catch a proper criminal. Sure you get my drift.

Doing 33 in a 30 zone, slightly darker than allowed windows,2 minutes late back to your parking meter, 3/4 mm wrong space on your number plate, all wrong but not really a major crime doing anyone any harm are they.

The Police have stopped me abotu my number plate, just otu of interest. THey cant decide what its ment to be. FIL 4362 is what its ment to be but they insist "i" isnt an issued letter in the uk and therefore my number plate has to be F1L 4362. THe problem with that is my number plate isnt an uk plate and isnt a 1. I now have FIL4362 on the front and F1L 4362 on the back or the other way round i cant remember now. Basicly now i have been stopped by every copper in the area they now leave me alone about the number plate. Not just the Lexus either i have had the number plate many years and had it on many cars.

I have a irish plate XIL never been told its a 1 or I i thought irish plates were 3 letters and 4 numbers tel them that if they pull you again wiki

As for tints 70% of light should be able to pass through the glass on the drivers and passengers windows otherwise illegal and a maximum of 6" sun strip

Number plates if they dont look like a stanard font then dont go mad for getting pulled you know you sholdnt have them even though your mate got them and hasnt been pulled lol

& fogs not got any on my car not had any for a while so i dont care haha

rant over .....

Yeah i was aware of the tint limit being very slightly darker than a normal car window.

As for the plate if yours is a NI plate it is an I if not i'm not sure as you say could be either. :)

FIL...... Just checked and your plate is a UK plate just not the mainland system..... It's from the Fermanagh area of Northern Ireland... Area code is xIL xxxx

So it's 100% a letter I and not a number 1. :winky: Possibly worth swapping that plate with a 1 in it in case you pass any ANPR sites on your travels.

I did read somewhere recently that the DVLA are considering bringing NI into line with the rest of the UK.... Not sure which letter they were going to assign as the area identifier.... Possibly U but not sure.

Thansk to both the above posters for taking the time to look up my problem. I was aware of what the plate was ment to be,an I, as i purchased the plate many years ago. Was nice to see the law hasnt changed and its definatly still an I though.

AS for the 6 inch sun strip, i dont know about illegal but its certainly an mot fail if it protrudes into the swept area of the wiper blades. Any sticker or non offical pass or tax discs is an mot fail if its within the swept area of the wipers. Any furry dice (if you still have them lol) or air freshners hanging of your interior mirror ir a fail. Worse of all is peoples sat nav stuck in random places on the windscreen.Any way of topic again. thanks for looking up my problem lads

just come back to this with a thought. If my numberplate is Irish and "Foreign" number plates dont have to be yellow and white with black letters (as with the mot test) does anyone think i would get away with black and silver plates like my mates Bently. They would look real smart on a black Lexus. I had a set (black silver pressed steel) on my 1969 escort and still have them in the garage i could stick them on the Lex and see what happens.

Fil, I’m not sure exactly what you were hoping to gain from contributing to this thread - having apparently been by far the loudest voice here.

Yet through the ramblings about what is or isn’t a fog-lamp, the oh-so-clever ways you or your mates have found to stick 2 fingers up at the law, or even the snide comments at me (when neither of my previous posts were directed personally at you), I struggle to see what you’ve achieved. Apart from possibly making yourself look as though you had nothing better to do.

Was it just a case of taking up an opposing point of view for the sake of it? A Monty Python “Am I in the right place for an argument?” moment!

You certainly didn’t see how the d!ck that I was originally referring to was driving on the night in question – weaving about and driving erratically around me while I had my family in the car. Never mind ME distancing myself from him, NO self-respecting Lexus owner would have wanted to be associated with that idiot. To be honest I hoped he might frequent this site and get the message. If there had been a single red light to stop him on the evening that I first posted, I was so angry at the time that I’d have delivered the message personally, and he wouldn’t have behaved like that again (or even got back up) in a hurry.

You also might notice that my last post talked about my Lexus ownership in the past-tense, as thankfully it’s now become the burden of another. It may be nice enough cruising along in comfort, but I’d rather be spending literally HALF my money per month on fuel in something that’s nowhere near as sluggish thanks. So I honestly don’t care what people think of me as a Lexus owner now, cos I ain’t one, and am all the happier for it!

Finally back to the fog lights: now that we all know about your extensive driving experience, have you ever ridden a motorbike at night in heavy rain? I have, and it’s difficult enough having 10,000 lights from a car mucking up your vision through all the water droplets, without brainless dorks making it 20,000 for the sake of fashion! So if you choose to align yourself with them rather than all of the people who know damn well that they are idiots, then more fool you.

That’s all I need to say on the subject, and for that matter, on the site. Now I HAVE got something better to do, and it isn't here. End of.

They aren't Irish. They are Northern Irish so are still UK plates issued by the DVLA which still have to be the same font and white / yellow as on the mainland. :winky:

Do you own a Lexus (or any other car) like this?

Its got drug-dealer tints just a bit darker than allowed

Its been decat and has a tail-pipe a terrier could get up

Its got number plates that get you stopped

Its got DIY HIDs you don't know how to adjust

Your tyres wear out in under 2000 miles

You always drive with your fogs on because it looks cool

There is quite a range of things you have to change back before each MOT

You don't think you have yet found all the Regs you can break and get away with it

Lots of people admire your car - you can tell by the way they flash you, wave their fists or slowly shake their heads

We don't know who you are - but quite a lot of us know what you are ........

Slightly on/off subject.

Wiring high beams to Fog lights??

Not particularly for improved night time vision but more for 'Flashing' to other motorist when being polite.

I began to think of this when I was flashed into traffic by a newish Scooby, his fogs and lights seamed to flash.

I have often flashed people out and they have failed to see the change in lights...

Or is this to Chavvy/pointless??

Love the post fjcfarrar but non of it applies to me.

Firstly i dont have drug dealer tints my fronts match the back and i havnt tinted the screen

I dont have a de cat and my tail pipe is smaller than the standard Lexus pipe.

My numberplates used to get me stopped but not because of any spacing issue but because of police not knowing what they are doing and could tell an I from 1

I do have hids but have made a shield for them so they dont bounce light upwards and i do also know how to adjust them.

My tyres are all brand new as i get them so cheap i could change them every week.

I dont drive with fog lights on.if you must know one doesnt work so it really does look crap if i up them on and because i never use them anyway have never bothered to change the bulb.

I dont have anything to change on my car before i put it in for mot. Firstly because theres nothing on my car that needs changing and secondly i am the mot tester.

I know i have all the regs i know i can break and get away with because an VOSA ID card works wonders with police.

I do get the looks you talk about, usauly when i ballon in the car, but as i am now 38 with 5 kids, 7 if you include the 2 i foster, this doesnt happen as often as it used to.

You would have to wire fogs into main beam which would then make them "driving lamps/spotlamps" provided they only came on with main beam. Perfectly legal as front fogs are not a legal requirement at the moment.

Whilst most of us "flash" people to allow them into traffic etc. you should always be careful because flashing lights is really supposed to be used as a warning.

Its called being devils advocate. If everyone agreed all the time there would be no conversation. My problem wiht you was that you have it in your head owning a Lexus elevates you to a higher status. You wish to distance yourself from anything "bad" that happens wiht a Lexus as you dont want it to reflect on yourself. Seems you only baught a Lexus in the first place as you felt you "didnt have anything to prove" in one. Your words. Its a car,its not a way of life. I very very frequently put people staright about the Lexus. People that think they are very posh and cost lots of money. Usually these people drive cars of higher value than mine and they are suprised that one can be had for £1500. A lexus or any other car isnt a status symbol A car doesnt elevate you to a higher class of people. Some of the richest people i know (customers) are the most down to earth guys i know. I service vehicle for the guys who came one place above the bee gees on the times rich list this year. The doen swan abotu with the "look at my car i am better then you " attitude that you seem to demand from owning a Lexus. No self respecting Lexus owner?? i fail to see why any driverof any car would want anything to do with the person you talk about,i fail to see what being a Lexus owner matters. Stopping at red lights to "give him the message personally" thats road rage isnt it. Isnt making threats of physical violance illegal "or even got back up" sounds like a threat to me. Surly physical abuse is far worse than any crime i have committed with a slighter darker tint on my windows.

I have ridden bikes many time and also been pillion never yet has a properly adjusted fog light dazzled me.

My view and no offense to anyone:

Use of fog lights when there is no fog is: illegal, dazzling (hence dangerous) and annoying and, in my experience, those indulging in this habit also tend to exhibit other less than endearing driving habits (of course this does not apply to all, just the ones I have encountered). I simply wish they wouldn't do it.

My first car was an orginal Mini and I have since worked my way through a number of other cars to the LS400 which I bought (relatively cheaply) because of the combination of low price, reputation for reliability and comfort. The car (whatever it may be) certainly doesn't make you a better or worse person, however I would suggest that some of the car's qualities (and I can only speak for the LS400) - comfort, excellent visibility, etc., by removing some of the stress associated with driving, give one the opportunity to be a more relaxed and considerate driver - I hope that all would seize this opportunity but it is clearly up to each individual.

Best wishes

No attempt to get at any individual because everyone who posts here is decently civilised, and yes sure, bad sarcasm and a lot of tongue-in-cheek. It is just I thought I detected a flavour in some posts of "S*d you, S*d the Law, S*d everyone, I will do as I please" and wonder if that is the way things are moving in general or have I completely turned into Victor Meldrew?

I'm not sure it's the way things are moving in general. There is at least one individual in this thread who is summed up nicely by your 'flavour' though.

On many sites such people get banned for trolling, especially after they have basically admitted only doing it to wind people up as they have nothing better to do!
