Insurance For Ls400 As Second Car/project

Recommended Posts

Just about to take on a 91 LS400 as a 2nd car project and wondered if any of you could recommend an insurance co for some reasonable insurance. As I use my full ncb for my family car and am probably only looking at third party for a fairly low mileage (5kish a year) if anyone can offer advice I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to some comfortable chilled drives in the coming months :shifty:

Hi, I use the NFU for all my car insurances .......... Sam at Market Drayton Cambs NFU.

I now insure 4 cars with the NFU and I thought the NCB extended to ALL cars.

I have mine isnsured as a second car (my van and bikes are my main form of transport) with RH Specialist Insurance (www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk) and couldn't get a better deal anywhere.

I've recently insured my LS400 as a second car (5,000 miles per year). I tried NFU as a lot of other members recommend them, but they weren't competitive for me because they favour rural postcodes. In the end Saga were by far the cheapest - but that's a sign of my age I suppose...

In general, third party insurance isn't much cheaper than comprehensive these days. A relative who works for a big insurance company says this is because the sort of people who traditionally buy third party insurance (young, inexperienced drivers of cars that are worth very little) have a lot more accidents, and so the companies end up paying out a lot (in third party claims) anyway. Now that my LS is 13 years old it's likely to be written off after even a minor accident, but it still seemed worth paying a little more to get comprehensive cover rather than TPFT.

And ur Comprehensive cover includes windscreen which having just claimed for mine and the cost looked like @£600+ makes it expensive TPFT.

So I will continue with Fully Comprehensive BUT I've just had my renewal and the premium looks to have rocketed by some 50 % this year.

Sam at the NFU is away today but I'll tackle her Monday beforer I go hunting for quotes.

I see someone mentioned the Co-Op CIS. I insured with them with my first car in the late '60s .. Am I that old !!!!

Apologies for the delayed reply.

My company should be able to help with this, we can usually 'mirror' over your existing NCB to the second car.

Feel free to give us a try.

Thanks for this. I renewed my insurance recently, but who knows how different things will be next year, so I'll keep you in mind.

On a related note, how many other LOC members park miles away from the supermarket entrance so that their beloved Lexuses don't get knocked by other cars or shopping trolleys?

I'm guilty of that, I park furthest away usually on the end of a row so at worst u only get a car on one side.

My other fav trick is to find two cars with two spaces between them then park in the middle of the two spaces, no chance of a door being swung open and people just think your a bad driver lol.hey it's not right but how many people just don't care about their cars or other peoples.

Hi you should be able to get classic insurance as a second car.

I park mine in the children bays in tesco's as i got a dent 3 days after haveing £800 of paintwork done. I tried parking it miles away only to find every time I returned people insist on parking next to it even if there is loads of outher spaces ( Tesco bays are just too small for the lex)

Yep agree they are too small Mark.

My other pet hate is coming back to find a people carrier or 4x4 is next to me. I get it all the time, these are the worst offenders!!!

Gah, this is my pet hate! Especially if the carpark is busy....

I usually park in a quiet section of the carpark, some distance from the shop; but I like to kid myself that I'm getting a bit of exercise having a brisk walk to & from; instead of being a fat lazy slob & parking as close to the door as possible, which most people seem to regard as the holy grail.

I think the disabled bays should stay close to the shop, but the kids bays should be furthest away. Give the little ones and mums a bit of exercise. Anyway, why should they get wider bays than the likes of us? Basic problem is too many people, too little space.

The other problem, of course, is kids who run around a supermarket as if it's a playground, not a shop, while Mum is aisles away looking at pasta. But this isn't anything to do with Lexuses - just one of my grumpy old man pet hates. (Another one is Mum who goes into a congested shop with a double buggy and casually parks it in front of the shelf I want to look at while she wanders off. The message is: I've had children, so you all have to deal with it.) Someone please start a new thread about Lexuses to distract me from all this...

I always park as far away from the entrance as possible but often find someone's park a beat up Transit or similar close to me, obviously thinking it's amusing.

On the insurance note, mine's a 93LS and I get it covered on a classic car policy. If you listen to the advice given by Martin Lewis (The Money Saving Expert) he'll tell you that often when you ask for a quote for 3rd party only it will be more than fully comp, something to do with them considering you a bigger risk. It's worth a look at this website.
