if you fancvy change it for xxx pounds - do it. What would you do if you new dpf would get blocked after another 6 weeks? Would you fit another one for xxx pounds? Dpf could fail because other things working not correctly in the engine:air mass meter, egr, lambda sensor etc. I've seen cars fitted with new dpfs units and they are failing again after 2-4-6 weeks. So take your own opinion.

Irrespective of what make/model of car you own/drive it always pays to investigate even the slightest variations in performance/behaviour of your vehicle. A small fault caught early might be a £5 fix which if ignored could cause the failure of several items leading to a bill which could run into £hundreds/thousands.

The answer is not to remove items (which are there for a reason) but to find the core problem and fix it.

hi guys, just want to share with all. i'm from Brunei Darussalam and here in Asia, we don't get IS220d through our Lexus dealer.it's only sold in Europe. So when i knew all about it (Lexus with diesel engine) i'm so exicted of it just because it can save me alot.( Here its cheaper to buy diesel fuel than patrol). To cut it short, i've been experiencing bout the Dpf filter blocked and cause VSC check, engine warining and traction control to light up. After making my researched, i found out the main reason why IS220d doesn't sell here in our region.it's because of the bad quality of the diesel fuel. it causes the DPF to blocked. i survey the DPF itself from eBay and it cost me ALOT to purchase and also it's shipment. So when i found out that the DPF can be remove from the vehicle but we need to remap the ecu, i went to our local garage and have a go with it. the problem is we can do the ecu remap. so theres only 1 thing for us to do without remapping the ecu.

firstly, we remove the DPF and we break the DPF filter inside it with a long steel till some of the filter inside the catalic comes out. the theory is to get the exhaust gas flow unrestricted/unblocked. then we install the DPF right back as per normal with all the O2 sensors. once we start the engine, all the warning has gone. (but if you still had the VSc light up, might as well reset it through diagnose). now the car runs even better. the power and acceleration has increased. hopefully it will never comes back. if you worry bout the smoke coming out of it, you don't have to. in my case, it doesnt. (well, puff of smoke maybe as you accelerate. as i guessed its normal for turbo cars.)

cheers guys.

did you ever experienced dpf problem? Did you take it to the garage which doesn't have a clue what is doing? And the best one : did you after spending 2k or more for replacing dpf fiter get the some light back on on the dash after few weeks? What would be your feeling? I think you never did experience this sort of problem . So I removed dpf out of my car: no more problems with dpf, no more regenerations, better fuel economy ,better performance etc. I know we could talk about it : remove or not to removed , but I stay on the bright side REMOVE IT and forget about it. Regards guys

Hello Emrys, did you go to the guys are based in Taunton ? I had problems with egr valve and dpf filter. In my case it was too late for regeneration but Peter managed to remove dpf , clean egr and clean intake system and injectors with his new toys. The car never drive better than today. Recommanded to all.So if you having problems with you IS220 don't hesitate to contact them - they know waht they are doing.

Regards.

Hej Przemek,

did the guys fitted a DPF emulator as this one http://fap-dpf.pl/emulatory when they removed the dpf?

If not how did they managed to trick the ecu?

Cheers

G.

I have the same DPF problem and was wondering if any of you guys could recommend someone in Coventry or there abouts that can fix the problem without me having to go to the dealer?

Any help/advice would be appreciated...

"Whats worrying me is that I had actually done a 200 mile trip from London to Manchester so was driving in 5th at about 2.5k revs all the way home. So surely should have had enough temp to burn of the soot and clear the filter"

Is it temperature or revs that are need to clean the DPF? I do a lot of longish trips but tend not to use a lot of Revs. For some strange reason I can use 6th at 70mph!

I have had problems with my 220d (55 plate) since new (e.g. going into limp home mode when trying to merge onto a busy motorway - scary!) and the service manager at my nearest Lexus dealer said last year that I had to accept that the engine is basically a very dirty engine and I therefore needed to take the rpm up to near the limit once or twice a week to clear 'things'. Driving on longish journeys at around 70ish in 5th gear would not achieve anything and I must "give it some welly". However in the current cold weather white smoke is pouring out of the exhaust nearly all the time (m.p.g. is steady at 27 mpg at a steady 60 to 70 mph). It has not gone into limp home mode recently but I am not holding my breath. The only good thing about the smoke is that following cars tend to give you a wide berth.

I've had my 2006 220 Sport for a little over 2 years and after the first couple of months of ownership I noticed smoking after sitting in traffic then accelerating away quickly. I do mostly urban miles and a stop-start 17-mile journey into the office every day. I'd previously been doing 30 miles which was stop-start, then about 10 motorway miles, winding country roads and a stop-start last 2 miles. I had numerous calls and garage visits to Lexus but they couldn't recreate or diagnose the problem. I even posted about it here. Eventually they followed me on a typical journey and saw the effect for themselves. I took it in and they said I'd need a new engine!! Fortunately, it would be replaced under warranty.

Last month I had a stuttering effect driving down to Wiltshire but didn't think much of it. On Tuesday I drove from London to Manchester and it was more pronounced but I got there without any problems. Yesterday I was driving back from Manchester and 40 miles into the journey the warning light (check VSC), engine and traction light illuminated. I stopped, called Lexus Roadside Assistance (the AA - pfftt!) who advised that I do a regeneration. I literally drove all the way back to London at 3.5k RPM! I was getting a loss of power pretty much the whole way and I was surprised I made it home without the dreaded "Limp mode" I'd heard so much about.

Car still not great on my drive into the office this morning but stil no limp mode yet. Now I'm beginning to think that the great plumes of smoke that I used to see before the engine was replaced was actually a good thing and my system was cleaning itself out! If I take this to Lexus and say that I think it was a direct result of the misdiagnosis and replacement of the engine maybe they'll fix it for free! (And pigs might fly right?)

Anyway, does anyone know of anywhere in London (or counties to the N, NW, W and SW of London) that will reliably remove the DPF and do a ECU remap (or DPF emulation) at a reasonable price?

So guys thought I would check back in after a while as it's now been close to 9 months since I had the DPF removed and I've done approx 10k miles since then with a lot of mixed driving.

Update:

1. Car still running fine

2. I have lost some MPG on a long run used to get 44-66mpg now only get 42-44mpg

3. i am still getting puffs of somke and i think this is because the DPF emulation bit by ecuflash.co.uk was not done correctly so I think the 5th injector? and fuel mix is not right or they have not removed dpf regen code, so usually when cold or engine is clod i am getting puffs of smoke noticeable But as the engine warms up and I hit motorway speeds these go away fro long periods and only come back at lower speeds after a fed days.

4. Anyone know if someone in Manchester can do a check of the DPF emulator/files used as I think this could be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. Have phoned ecu flash 3-4 times over last few months and always been promised call backs but never happened.

I'm from Croatia and by this site owner instructions (Peter from P&P Auto Services) I have succesfully removed DPF and installed emulators.

Car now runs like torquemonster train!!

Shigo,

I´m from Croatia too, and just booth new IS220D F-sport (04/2013) and it is still new, so I just wanted to ask you guys who had problems with it, after how many years or kilometars did you started to have problems with them, or remove your EGD and DPF. I will do everything by the book util 5 years of guarantee are still valid so I don´t lose it, but when the time comes, if I have some problems with EGR or DPF does someone know someone in croatia or somewhere near who could do this for me, because still I´m not sure I could do it myself.

So every help is welcome to keep EGR and DPF clear and clean as long as possible, so what do you guys recommend to do, or how to drive to keep it clean.

Thank you all a lot,

Pozdrav Hrvatima :)

Hi,

I have a 07 220d and last week I had the Check VSC light on the dash + reduced performance from the engine (wont rev beyond 2k rpm). I took the car to a local garage where they diagnosed it to be a p2002 fault and advised to have it checked / fixed at Lexus Dealer.

On the drive back home I bought a wynns DPF cleaner, added it with around 40 ltrs of diesel and now the Check VSC light is gone and the car no longer goes in to limp mode.

I did some motorway and city driving yesterday and have never seen the dreaded check vsc light come back on!!

I would recommend giving this product a try before going for expensive repair job!

That's great to here, I've read some very good reviews about Wynns DPF cleaner. I'm wondering if its work putting one in the tank every now and then as more of a prevention??

I need to get hold of some but it's two or three times the price out here. I too do mostly short journeys so I'm a little worried about the dpf, I do use a fuel additive so hopefully that will help

nams, Great advice, thanks you so much. Followed your suggestion and worked a treat.

2 days ago my 220d went into limp mode (with Check VSC in the display panel and the engine and VSC lights ON) an hour into a 2 hour motorway journey

Exact same thing happened about 18 months ago and Lexus Cheltenham quoted £2300 for a new DPF but ended up charging me £900 to clean it. I wasn't going to pay that amount again and was considering my options when I saw the post from nams. I'll bore you with the detail of exactly what I did below so that others can try the same solution. If you just want the short version - it worked a treat!!

Bought some of the DPF cleaner nams suggested from local Halfords for under £10 and took the car for a blast down the motorway. En route to the motorway car went into limp mode a couple of times. Stopped/started engine to clear this and finally got onto motorway where I kept the revs up at 3000rpm for about an hour. Didn't notice any smoke or any signs of anything happening and all the warning lights remained on for the whole journey but the car drove as normal with no sign of limp home mode.

This morning I took my son to work, 10 miles across country keeping revs over 2500rpm whenever possible. Car drove perfectly with no sign of limp mode but the lights remained on. Dropped my son at work and turned engine off for a couple of minutes. When I turned the engine back on the lights had gone.

This was only this morning and it may only be short-lived. I will add another update if that turns out to be the case. Fingers crossed!!

I'd love to know exactly what the dealer did for the £900 they charged me last year. They said that they used chemicals to clean the DPF. I wonder if it was the same chemicals that I bought for £9?!?!

What frustrates me is that the dealers stated last year that the odd blast up the motorway would prevent this sort of thing happening. This is simply not true. Both times this has happened to me has been an hour into a 2 hour motorway journey. The fact is that normal driving will not prevent this. You need to thrash the engine occasionally but you have no idea when this is necessary. if you drive like a boy racer all the time you'll probably never have any problem. But how many boy racers buy a diesel?

I find it rather pathetic that in order to optimise the function of a device designed to protect the environment you have to thrash the engine and burn more fuel. And the cost of cleaning (£900) and replacing (£2300) will send many cars to the scrap yard long before their time is up because it is simply not worth spending that kind of money on an older car. How is that good for the environment?

450 on eBay new and 2 hours to fit seems a good price I think because Lexus think cuz we drive a Lexus we are minted but I think people like me who buy an older don't but believe dealers with their prices and feel no one else can repair them I would use an independent Lexus garage like Toyotech near Gatwickand with prestige the marque has???

Hi all

I have had the same problem, limp mode about 6 months ago, RAC cleaned EGR valve, he told me this could only be cleaned once, 3 months later ,same problem, so I took it to a diesel specialist in near Ormskirk whose software could not read Lexus computer(but still charged me) after phoning me, they replaced the EGR valve and after £450 I picked up the car, Within 2 miles limp mode again.

After a 20mph drive home I phoned Lexus and booked a £75 diagnostic test, they seemed to have a great deal about the problem and mentioned that the Cat and DPF may need replacing. I then went on E bay and managed to buy a Euro part system for around £75, as it was ordered for a customer who never had it fitted.

I kept my appointment with Lexus Liverpool, who attempted to regenerate the Dpf, but to no avail, so they offered me a cat and Dpf for £1600, at this point I mentioned the copy system which just happened to be in the boot. They agreed to fit the copy for £400 and carry out extra works, all in I agreed to a price of all in £500 including diagnostic, but they did warn me about white smoke.

All works complete and 5000miles later, white smoke is the only problem, mpg around 36miles per gallon on a full 450 mile cycle, which is pretty embarrassing during low speed motorway standing traffic.

I believe the difference between a genuine CAT/DPF is the fact that the original part contains, as Lexus Platinum, which collects diesel particles and the copy does not and god knows how they get rid of them, which brings me to the conclusion that this genuine filter would need replacing every 20k.

Conclusion-go petrol as Lexus has

£600 for dpf deleting is way too high, average cost is £350-£500 max. In my other post i mentioned two places that are highly recommended by various lexus, bmw, vw and mazda users. If dpf delete is done properly then you should have no problems of passing MOT. Dpf cannister must be physically attached to the vehicle, the internal honey comb filter is only removed { this is the part that gets blocked} so MOT tester is none the wiser and too be honest he only does visual checks to conform to new VOSA dpf rules and the emulator fitted allows you to pass emission test.

It is important you don't go to some cowboy outfit that will charge you arm and leg and dpf delete is not done accordingly.

I use the professional version of wynns dpf cleaner not the standard purple bottle
