I am currently running a IS200 and getting 19mpg. Doesnt seem to matter how i drive, fast, slow mix of both motorway or a road, still only get 22mpg at the most. I dont mind this figure as i have a cheap runabout as well. My thought was whats the returns on a Ls400. I dont think they look as stylish as the IS but love the v8 sound and obviously the extra power.

So my question is what mpg figures are people getting from their LS400.

Not as stylish as the IS?? You're on shaky ground here..lol

I get around 30mpg from mine. Last weekend we went on a 200 mile drive around the Scottish Peninsulas and she returned 33mpg!

I have just gone to Wales and back from Hampshire a round trip of 396 miles and returned 33.7 add to that I run on LPG giving me an equivelent of 67.4 mpg as I only pay around half the cost of petrol.

I will forgive the remark on styling as I gather you havent yet been bitten by the what is the LS400itus.

Oh how I love my Lexus.

An LS400 is an aquired taste I'm sure.

I love the lack of sound nearly as much as not feeling the potholes, can hear the radio all the time when it's 1 click above mute.

got a '98 mkiv with 260k on the clock.

mine manages 30+ mpg's on a long trip (usualy ~80mph cruising).

but on average i get 17mpg as i do 6 or more 1 mile trips a day in it.

you could always look at an old? soarer - the 4.0 has the same V8 :P.

I agree...

I have a '98 MKIV and on a recent trip to Gatwick and back, I averaged 35.2mpg.

Running around town (in winter with no A/C) I average about 18mpg. In the summer this drops to 16ish.

Considering my 2000 2 litre Mondeo Ghia averaged 21mpg in town, I'm pleased with that.

Thanks

Mike

How come you guys are getting 30+mpg? and Manicmark: 37?

I dont doubt these figures at all, but there must be something wrong with mine.

I used to get 26ish and 28ish on a long run (I brim to brim it a lot)

Over the last 12 months its down by about 4mpg.

Come on guys...help me out...whats wrong with the old girl. I have noticed recently that there is a lot of condensation from the exhausts.??????

Hi mines the 98 vvti engine with the 5 speed auto box its been on lpg for the last 30,000 miles so has been de coked by using gas, the mpg i quoted is what my computer reads, but as i run mainly on gas my lpg useage is £40 for 240 miles average & £40 for 300 miles if im carefull on a motorway run.I use my brakes as little as possable without being silly & my job entails teaching eco driving so I tend to practice what I preach You have a 93 mark 2 with a 4 speed box so it will use more. when did you last do a plug & air filter change that may be the loss in mpg.

Probably nowt at all wrong with the car .................. driving style maybe and changes in that ......... I recently went on a Speed Awareness Course ........ £85 in lieu of a £60 fine and 3 points ...... and an amazing revelation it was too .................. quite enjoyed it actually ........... and simply, changes in driving style WILL make a significant difference to mpg.

My LS400s have averaged 30+ ( just a bit more ) on a good long steady run at 70 - 80 and fully laden, down to mid 20's averaging and much lower with popping down to the shops, cold starts and never warming-up and the like.

Condensation from the exhausts, well I guess you're maybe just noticing that ( but how you do so when your driving beats me ! )

Just normal mpg I guess.

Sorry guys but my IS looks slightly less square than an LS. As a motormechanic/mot tester its drives like its still new. i keep it A1 tip top mint condition. (Going in for bonnet respray friday as i picked up a stone chip sunday on a trip from manchester to cearnarfon). It drives as straight and as quiet as anything else i have driven and i have driven just about every type of car on the road. Anyway The Ls is better spec than the IS and the v8 is a bit smoother. On the down side i havnt yet come across a manuel Ls !! Nothing against the auto just prefer a manuel. I maybe in for a trade up. or should i say maybe in the market for a LS and if they not better on fuel than the IS i may as well of load it again and keep the IS.

off topic but RE: condensation from the exhausts , is a sign of a well running engine & fuel system. On an LS400 I'm thinking you just haven't driven it far enough to get the whole system hot for a while.

tl;dl , water in exhaust exits is 99.999% normal

also , since when has less square been good?.

I love the look of square cars. Granada coupe , cortina , alfa 33 & 75 , ls400 (i do think the mk3 looks better tbh).

there is no manual LS , a manual box would ruin the whole 'drive while doing hardly anything' experiance.

edit , I am biased - dont like "jelly mould" styling of new cars.

ever since the ford sierra cars have mostly looked like they popped out of a cooking utensil.

I'd have a hard job of telling an ls200 from a mk2 astra from 50 yrds.

Agreed. In my opinion the IS series is just not Lexus enough. They should've stuck with the top range cars! An IS would look more in place with a Toyota badge.

Now that just sounds a little snobby to me!. My Lexus hasnt got a badge, i took it to off. To me its a car not a status symbol. I also removed, what has now become the boy racer style Lexus chrome lights. As mentioned before i have driven everything from Reliant Robin to Bently Continental, from MK1 RS2000 escort to ferrari 355. A car is a car its a way to get about for me nothing more. To me the Lexus is a educated choice resonable style good comfort great reliablity resonable purchase price. Whats the LS got that the IS doesnt have?? cruise control?? cant think of anything else. Must admit mines had a few bits added that like full closure windows and mirrors, just press the lock button and everything closes and winds in. Its got touch screen tv dvd sat nav reverse camera. so i dont see the spec up grade as anything special really from the IS to the LS. The point of my post was to see if a v8 LS is a cheap to run as an IS afterall who wouldnt have a v8 instead of a straight 6.

Not 'snobby' intended at all. Just an opinion!

Just like you think that the IS is more stylish then the Ls..

I owned a 95 GS 300 Sport for 3 years, a 2000 IS 200 Sport for 10 months and currently have 95 LS 400 and must say that my preferences have to be the 300 & 400 (300 for sporty look and 400 for power and refinement). I do like the look of the 200 Sport but it's just not 'Lexus' enough and compromises in every way - small boot, 2.0 engine that as thirsty as 3 & 4 litre and not as refined. Wanted to get another 200 recently but settled for BMW 5 series instead. As for the IS 250 - what a horrible looking Toyota that is !

In Japan the IS is badged a Toyota Altezza albeit it's turbocharged and doesn't look as out of place in the Toyota line up as it does in the Lexus line up buth then again look at the ugly duckling RX ... horses for courses ...

When did you last check your air filter?

I happened to glance at mine recently for the 1st time since owning the car  and it was minging. I've banged the worst of the dirt & leaves out, but I'll need to replace it. I've never managed to get an accurate MPG for mine ('95 facelifted Mk1, or what I'd call a Mk2), because I never remember to keep a tally of the miles when I fill up vs. the drive vs. the miles when I fill up again... I did notice that I got about 300 miles on a full tank, while towing an empty car trailer (at about mumble70mumble); towing the full car trailer back @ around 55mph I did the same trip in a bit over 1/2 tank.

I have just got in from petrol station and have brimmed the tank and the filler neck as usual. My trip says i have done 314 miles on the last tank full. Thats just over 20mpg. I was on a run from Manchester to Cearnarfon on sunday so most of that 314 miles was motorway (aprox 250 miles of it). As most of the run is A55 i would say my aveage speed for the trip was 65 mph. So IS200 is returning 20 and a bit miles to the gallon. My emissions are perfect,i guess its just a thirsty engine.

I normally get 350-400mpg, if I'm not towing or carting heavy stuff around. And I definitely have a lead foot - typical motorway/A-road cruise is 85 leptons +/- 10. What I can't tell you is how much a "full tank" is; I've yet to actually run out (or even get to the hiccuping stage), despite the needle being off the dial a couple of times. Maybe I should do that one day, just drive until dry; add a gallon & see how far I go :winky:

I can believe it, I managed 36.7 in my LS430 between Hook of Holland and the border of Poland. Cruising at about 55 and with the aircon off, minding my own business, ipod on and letting everything blast past me. I still had almost a quarter of a tank left when I crossed the Polish border, I was going to see how close to Warsaw I could get on one tank but hit 80 miles of single lane roads and had to blast past loads of trucks. That demolished my average and I got bored and wellied it the rest of the way.

Hello,

I've had a mark 3 which did 21-22mpg in general use and 31mpg on motorways keeping to around 70-80mph.

My mark 4 was brilliant and averaged 25mpg generally and 35mpg on motorways, again around 70-80mph.

The 430 is not so good and has averaged 23.4mpg over the last 7000 miles, yesterday I went to West Winch in Norfolk, along M42, M6, A14, A605 and A47 doing speed limit where possible on the A roads and again around 80 on the motorways. Total of 332 miles and traffic was generally flowing well. I brimmed the tank when I started and again this morning, it has worked out at 27.7mpg.

All cars were/are well maintained and I have not quoted computer read outs which on the mark 4 and the 430 give around 2mpg better.

Pete

Ps I think the IS looks good, just not big enough for my taste/waistline, but at 19/20mpg I don't think I could afford to run one.Perhaps it's a case of the bigger engine not working so hard?

I just run mine light on to light on. I worked on £75 pound fill being 70 litres. The cost of petrol is pence diffrence from station to station so i just drive into which ever station is nearest when the light comes on. I know theres probably a gallon or so in reserve (after the light comes on) but even then i get 70 litres in. So 70 litres being 15.5 gallons and getting 314 miles for that amount works out at about 20 to the gallon. I wouldnt want to run till it cut out just to see the figures.

. I wouldnt want to run till it cut out just to see the figures.

You don't have to do that, you fill it, and note the mileage, then run it till the light comes on, or your down to a quarter tank.

Then fill it again and subtract the earlier mileage from your current mileage.

You now have the miles you got for the amount of fuel you just replaced -simples!
