Hi folks.

While swapping out the rack boot I noticed a bad leak from the near side rack. Explains why the boot was shot.

I see that it's not uncommon but I can't find any repair kits available for it.

There's a crowd on eBay selling refurb'd units for c. 300.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

EDIT: found the part number on toyodiy for the gasket kit. Is this a straightforward job?

Hello,

I've never rebuilt a steering rack and I think there are certain proceedures to preload the rack which are not DIY friendly.

Do you have a local steering specialist that could do the rebuild for you?

It may be worth contacting Smithie at the Soarer Sanctuary to see if he can either supply a recon or rebuild yours.

Thanks mate.

I've sourced a used one so the pressure is off so to speak.

I might have a crack at rebuilding it over time and if it goes belly up I can always cut my losses. I'd have to give it a good ragging around a SC carpark afterwards before I'd be happy taking it out on busy roads.

I had a root-around and couldn't find anyone else with this issue, maybe time is taking its toll? Is it possible bits where out on these cars?

I think my exhaust gaskets are going, noticed the other day I can hear the V8 roar under accelaration, does this mean I can actually use that impact gun I bought from Aldi 3 years ago! :whistling:

I've read a few comments on American sites referring to a common 'leaking rack' problem. But, it certainly doesn't seem to be too common over here.

I unhooked the faulty rack this evening - no problems, however I can't get the steering column off of it.

I've soakted it with a healthy squirt of penetration oil - just wondering whether anyone has come across this problem and how they surpassed it?

Oh, btw, the old fluid stinks ! Looking forward to getting some new fluids in there. Any other preventative measures recommended while I'm working on the steering?

Thanks all....
