Sell Or Keep

Well I've had my IS200SE auto for just over eleven years now and wondering if I should get rid or keep it.

110,000 miles, needs new timing belt, exhaust and tidying up generally but I wonder if anyone has had one from 100,000 upwards? What went wrong and was it really expensive to fix? Just had new Avon Tyres all round.

Funds are low and it's been suggested that I change to a smaller car to save money. Any comments what to change to?

hiya iv had my is200 for 3 years now and is about to click over to 123K on the clock. Cant say iv had any major go wronge yet fingers crossed. The only thing iv had so far was water getting via the windowscreen. As you'v had yours for over 11 years i would assume that it has a detailed service history and has been well looked after. So i would say it would be ok for a little longer. I was thinking about changing mine about 6months ago but decided to keep it for a few more years as its still very reliable and at the end of the it always cost you money to change cars even if you down sizing. There is a few guys on here who cars have 150K+ on the clock they may have a few more problems at that high mileage, but doubtful as the engines are almost bulletprof.

The mechanic mentioned possible gearbox problems, I know auto boxes once they go wrong are expensive to fix but I've not heard any Lexus horror stories about them.

It won't last forever but a couple more years would be great.

I ran my 10 year old IS200 from 40k (when I got it) to 144k (when I sold it recently). Other than general wear and tear it was one reliable car.

Unless you do a high mileage each year, I would reckon that the depreciation over the next few years on your economy car would outway any savings on fuel. You could also run into repair bills on your economy car. At the end of the day,it's an emotional decision not a financial one.

If your IS has to provide the majority of the funds for a replacement; keeping yours with known up-coming costs may be a better bet than something else with an unknown potential for problems. Basically, the IS has reliabilty and longevity better than virtually any other car of similar age or quite a bit newer.

I don't believe the "possible" problems with your auto gearbox will actually turn into an issue. Obviously some have failed, but this is rare - I have only ever seen one mentioned on this forum.

If you do get auto gearbox problems, there are plenty of specialists about who may offer a not so expensive solution. Chances are it probably won't happen.

Cam belt, not yet, soon, next week. Yes I know it's overdue. The owners manual said 60,000.

Looks like it's a keeper for now. Looking at updating made me see how much road tax has jumped since I got mine in Jan 2000.

If it's any comfort, mine managed 148,000 on one cambelt!
