Supermarket Petrol

Hi, Filled up my IS300 to the top from empty with TESCO 95grade unleaded 3 days ago,,since then the car has started to run pretty rough and the engine management light came on but strangely hasn't been on today, I'm not too sure of the quality of petrol from supermarkets anyone else had problems, does any member think that super grade is better for the large 300 engine?

The Higher grade petrol is better for any car! In my opinion my Is200 ran better when on it, definitely a cleaner burn and what felt like a sharper car but who can afford £1.47 a litre every top up, not me!

Often wondered about Supermarket petrol myself but I don’t think it’s any worse than its equivalent at other petrol stations.

i have run my 250 on tesco 99 for 2 years, and never had a problem. it runs perfectly, and i think i get better mileage and power too. when i have had to put other fuel in like BP or shell optimax, i haven't noticed any difference at all.

I fill up with Sainsburys or Asda 95, occasionally I'll stick in a 'branded' fuel depending on where I am when I need to fill up. It makes absolutely no difference to my mileage (if you have an Iphone get the Road Trip LE app, great bit of kit if you're an MPG nerd like me).

Unfortunately I can't stretch to anything more than 95, would be interested to see if it makes any difference, and enough of a difference to warrant the extra bucks filling the tank!

I asked a similar question last December: Supermarket petrol=emissions failure? You may find it interesting to read some of the comments. From what I understand the jury is still well and truly out! Although those with Bio Chemical knowledge seem to think its not a problem.

I have no Bio Chemical knowledge but I have been using Tesco 95 unleaded (for my LS400) and Tesco 99 unleaded (for my Porsche) for years now and never a problem. Used to use the high grade Shell but since switching I have noticed no difference (I actually switched because I became aware that, at the time anyway, the Shell highest grade was lower octane than Tesco!). Of course any petrol station can get a bad batch.

Hi,I have only used supermarket fuel(tesco in the last 10 years)as it is the nearest to me in my last 3 cars - a mazda xedos 6 and two is 200 sports(admittedly)have always used 99 grade and never had a problem, neither has my wife with the 95 grade in her ford, renault or galaxy.Probably more of a coindence than bad fuel.

Since Supermarkets are major players with huge clout in the Fuel Market; there is no question that they are palmed off with junk petrol. However, things can go wrong, mistakes can be made, and when they do, huge numbers in proportion to sales are affected.

Super Grade fuels claim improvements which can really only affect the average car in ways that specialist measuring equipment is needed to detect. Generally, the extra cost is likely to be more than the value of the improvement.

The IS300 has a lazy, unstressed engine, and should run well on any fuel in the range of grades specified.

Maybe a sensor detected a problem temporarily caused by the fuel you recently bought, or equally possible the sensor itself is making a bad connection or is becoming faulty. If the light keeps coming on, check the Lambda sensor first. I do not know where it is on the IS300, but it is usually somewhere on the exhaust manifold or pipe nearby.

I would never lt the tank go to empty, I always understood that if you do, and theres c*** in the tank you can stir it up and get rough running....I run my 300 on Asda most of the time or whoevers cheapest..!

I only ever really use supermarket fuel. Very occasionally I'll fill up at an Esso or Shell if there's one in the area but I can't say that either have made any noticable difference to the way mine runs.

Like Garthy, I use the Roadtrip app on my phone and the difference in mpg is negligable (if indeed the increased figures are not just a fluke). Not enough to offset the price difference.

You may have spotted the problem? I never let the fuel gauge go below the one quarter mark.

  • 2 years later...

I have always used shell v-power in the IS300. I have found this is the best suited fuel for the wolf!

I have tried many other types of fuel and it ran not the best and bit like the IS200 ? !

the 300 is different ball game and the higher the octane and quality of fuel you use , the better it runs unstressed.

in the end though it mainly comes to the type of driving is outputted and the type of city//urban usage -
