Recommended Posts

today i test drove a is 200d with a view to testing it's economy against that of my is 220d.the conditions were not ideal(very windy)and i feel that both would have attained higher figures under calmer weather.both vehicles were driven by myself under the same driving style.

extra urban

200 achieved 42.3 mpg

220 achieved 41.3 mpg

motorway testing using cruise control.outward 6 miles,return 6 miles.outward+return divided by 2 =results below.

70 mph in 5th

200.......... 55.8

220.......... 52.4

75mph in 5th

200.......... 49.7

220.......... 46.75

81mph in 5th

200..........44.00

220..........41.75

90 mph in 6th

200..........37.05

220..........36.9

conclusion=200 is about 5% better on consumption on my test.

Interesting comparison, how did the two feel in terms of performance?

Also, how many miles does your 220D compared to the 200D? I guess there are many variables that could affect such a test including how well run in the engine is, fuel quality, wear and stuff like EGR Valve deposits.

Regardless, thanks for the information :)

the 200 is more responsive in 1st and 2nd but runs out of puff when the 220 is just getting into the strong power band.the ride in the 200 is more compliant and copes with rough roads better to give a more relaxed and comfortable journey, the trade off is more body roll during cornering.the clutch in the 200 is also lighter than the 220.the loss of the big punch from the turbo is the big down side imo.

Strange to say this but listening on here over the years no two 220Ds are the same it would be interesting to drive another 220d to compare with your existing 220D there would more than likely be just as much of a difference.
